Bag thieves charged in Newton case

Victoria Police have charged a man and a woman with the theft of jewellery and money in a handbag snatch that belonged to Patti Newton.

Newton was shopping Chadstone shopping centre on May 16 when her bag was stolen from under the table where she and daughter Lauren were having lunch.

It contained jewellery, which police say was of substantial value, and cash.

Benjamin Thorpe, 32, and Rachel Ward, 34, both from Hampton Park, were arrested and charged late last night.

Victoria Police say some of the jewellery has been recovered, and detectives are hopeful more may be located in the future.

Last week on Melbourne radio Newton spoke of the sentimental value of the jewellery, much of which were family heirlooms. She was taking them to a jeweller at Chadstone at the time.

  1. Just close your eyes, think your in Beverly Hills and a big star.
If Australia does a remake of Keeping Up Appearances this role would be ohhh so right.

  2. i did have a chuckle when hearing on the news, the list of items that were apparently in this one handbag.. a number of items preceeded by words “Gucci” and “Louis Vuitton”, thousands of dollars of cash and jewellery.. She’s only Patti Newton not Her Royal Highness, but here’s a tip Patti, if you’re going to eat Hungry Jacks or stop for a cup of chino at the Chaddy food court, leave your Louis Vuittons and Gucci merchandise at home

  3. Firstly, I can’t stand Patty Newton, Berts cool, but Patty no way. I wont bother going into the reasons why.
When this happened she really did seem to be enjoying the attention, she had a smile ear to ear the whole press conference.
Secondly, peoples belongings, heirlooms, jewelry, cars etc etc are stolen nearly every minute of the day and when one of us the unwashed masses go to the police its always the standard “there’s not a lot we can do” and of course when Pattys effects get stolen there’s state wide exposure, press conferences, detailed descriptions, an actual case is opened with manila folders and everything and the thieves are court within 48 hours.
The most obvious question here is, why does this umm, well celebrity is defiantly not the right word, err how about wife of a celebrity, why does she get such swift action and the rest of us get nothing?
Even when the Prime Ministers house was broken into you didn’t see him on TV smiling and they wern’t caught in 48 hours. We make jokes about America and the god-like treatment of there celebrities as if we are different, but we seem to be trying so hard to emulate it!

  4. It says a lot about modern television news coverage that the theft of Patti’s bag was the lead story on the two commercial 6:00PM news services.
