David Stratton makes rare ABC return

Retired and legendary film critic is back on screens this week in a brief interview on the work of filmmaker Warwick Thonrton.

Legendary film critic David Stratton makes a rare return to ABC this week, with a cameo appearance in Creative Types with Virginia Trioli.

Trioli profiles First Nations director Warwick Thornton. Going through a box of old photos and memorabilia, Thornton finds the first hand-written draft of Samson and Delilah -his Cannes-acclaimed debut which drew 5 stars from At the Movies hosts Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton.

Stratton, now retired from film criticism, features in a rare zoom cameo with Trioli as part of the show’s inclusion of other artistic voices adding commentary or talking about collaboration.

“For every episode, there’ll be at least two other really well known and celebrated and important Australian creatives who we speak to about our key subject,” said Trioli.

“For (choreographer) Rafel Bonachela there’s Kylie Minogue. Not nothin’ thank you -very proud of that! For Warwick Thornton there’s Cate Blanchett who joins us, and David Stratton… for Trent Dalton, we have Simon Baker. Really interesting creatives in their own right, who are all incredibly generous in saying yes.

“I am going to do something with those. They’re all 15 minute interviews that we did with these people. I don’t want to waste them just by having a few grabs.”

Tuesday’s episode also sees Trioli on the claypans of the Ilarpa Claypans outside Alice Springs, explaining how landscape is at the centre of his work.

“We walked through the dry riverbed where Warwick Thornton used to play as a kid, and where it all began for him in Alice Springs. It was very intimate. They were really trusting of us and they let us in, in a really wonderful way.”

Creative Types with Virginia Trioli screens 9pm Tuesday on ABC.

  1. Nice to hear. I so miss tuning in to At the Movies/The Movie Show each week; it’s a real shame ABC or SBS didn’t maintain it with a new pair of critics. The retro back-to-back episodes on Viceland Sunday mornings are a treat.

    1. And you know what? They tried, and no one cared- they just wanted Margaret and David. It shows how highly the public felt about the Pomeranz/Stratton partnership.
