WIN TV news chief sacked

A news story on Canberra's local government has resulted in claims of defamation and scalps behind in the local WIN News.

The chief of staff of WIN TV news in Canberra has been sacked and a political reporter stood down after a complaint to the station about by an ACT politician’s senior staff member.

The complaint from a senior member of Chief Minister Jon Stanhope’s staff pertained to a story on government-owned fleet management company Rhodium. It is understood the sackings were in part because a story aired with statements that have since been alleged to be defamatory.

John Roe was sacked from his position at the Canberra news station at 11am on Thursday after just three months in the position. Reporter Geraldine Nordfeldt has been suspended from covering local politics just six weeks out from the local ACT election.

WIN is now exploring its legal options after a defamation case was brought against it by board members of Rhodium.

Sources told The Canberra Times the Chief Minister’s office had been unhappy for some time with WIN TV’s political news coverage and had discussed its grievances with the station.

Several members of WIN TV staff have spoken of their dismay at Roe’s sacking and said he was a likeable and capable man who would stand by his reporters.

Roe joined WIN News in May following a second stint at SBS News and A Current Affair. He had previously been involved in high-level indigenous affairs in advisory roles with the Liberal government.

WIN state news director Stella Lauri refused to comment.

  1. In regards to Pauline’s comment, could you please tell me what this has to do with the sacking of the news chief??? Everyone’s perfect… right!!! I’d like to see you get up there and do her job, which i think she does a fantastic job and has definitely come a long way from the first night i saw her on tv in her early days. Sure she was a little nervous back then but who wouldn’t be! Keep up the great work Jacqueline.

  2. Could someone PLEASE teach Jacqueline Taylor the difference between “picture” and ‘pitcher’? When I watch Win weather I keep waiting for pitchers to appear on the screen – all I see is the usual weather picture!! Also please make sure she knows how to pronounce the names of regional towns and businesses – nobody expects her to know them all but surely research is part of the job – Pomonal and Seppelt were two recent mispronunciations.
    Thanks.
