Women’s Basketball & Netball

Despite earlier concerns, the ABC will air the Women's National Basketball League while TEN has the Netball Test Series coming.

The ABC will air live coverage (ADST) of the 2008-2009 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season on ABC2 with highlights to screen later on ABC1. Earlier this year the ABC came under attack for plans to drop its live ABC2 coverage.

Commentary will be led by ABC Sport broadcasters Gerard Whateley and Darren Boyd.

(Highlights ABC1: 2:30pm Saturday, 04 Oct)

ABC2

(Highlights ABC1: 2:30pm Saturday, October 11)

Meanwhile Network TEN has the Netball Test Series between Australia v England 11:15pm on Wednesday October 8th. That’s even on the SD channel, not HD. As a result, Letterman is pushed back to 1:15m

  1. The only reason Ten’s netball is on so late is due to scheduling from netball australia.

They set the times for the matches months before the deal with Ten was agreed upon.

Future test series will have matches scheduled in the afternoon, so they can be shown live at 3pm on weekends.

  2. It seems that no network in this country has been able to define an appropriate model for the televising of women’s sport that actually rates well.

Yes, mixed competitions like the Tennis Open and Olympics do well, but women dominated sports such as netball have never found an audience. I wonder if there is a better method of presenting such material that will have broader appeal?
