  1. ONE HD will air on channel 1 and channel 12. They’re the channels where TEN HD is on. So i guess ONE HD will replace TEN HD 🙁

    Will TEN make any more new channels? Cuz for ‘Freeview’ they said theres gonna be lots of new channels.

    Will there still be sport on the original TEN? Hope not cuz those sport lovers have a whole channel dedicated to them 24/7. If TEN show sport on the original channel then they mights as well change all their channels to 24/7 sport. Far out ten sux.

    seriously sport,
    seriously sux!

  2. hmm, certainly more questions than answers. Surely Ten won’t be leaving themselves without a HD channel to simulcast their regular programmes (House, NCIS etc) in High Def.

    Won’t hold my breath for an announcement from Southern Cross Ten regarding if they will carry this new channel. Ironic that by the time they get around to giving us Ten HD, it’ll be replaced by One HD.

    *sigh*.. if only Canberra could be classified as Metro.. SC is a shocker.

  3. Hmmm, they did really did leave quite a few questions to be anwsered. Will normal ten hd shows still be shown? Still very exciting, hope it buys more rights to golf tournaments and tennis tournaments then i won’t even have to think about foxtel.

  4. Surely Ten has to broadcast Australian HD tv shows as part of their license. How will the likes of Rove, Aus Idol, Neighbours, amongst others be shown in HD now?

    And I was enjoying catching up on Neighbours on Sunday afternoons, why would Ten take this away?

  5. Great ten! Good to see someone make a move… I hate sports!! but i am sure that nine or seven will have a dedicated drama channel? PLZ! or movies? (prob cost too much, but i can hope!)

  6. From my understanding I think it will be as follows;

    One HD – Channel 1
    TEN SD – Channel 10
    One SD – Channel 12

    So this new channel will be in HD on Channel 1, SD on Channel 12 and then what is currently TEN will be SD on Channel 10. Although I am liking the idea of a sports channel and HD to boot, it is kind of leaving all the shows TEN has and films in HD in the dark.

  7. to Rick:

    ONE HD will replace the existing Ten HD. There is not enough bandwidth in a mux for more than one HD channel + two SD channels.

    The only hope for people who currently enjoy the programming on the current Ten HD, is that they might use the second SD channel for this. But from what Ten has said, that channel will simply simulcast ONE HD for those who don’t have an HD TV/box. So to hell with the rest of us who don’t give a rat’s about sport.

  8. As of next year, each commercial network is limited to 1 HD channel and 2 SD channels in total.

    As this new sport channel seems to be taking up 1 HD and 1 SD channel, that just leaves 1 SD channel for TenSD (ie, what is currently on channel number 10 on a set top box).

    That means:
    – All of Ten’s current shows such as Australian Idol, House, NCIS etc will no longer be available in HD
    – All of the extra stuff that TenHD has been showing such as Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, Smalville etc will not be shown at all, as there is no longer a channel available to put them on.

    I love the fact that the networks are using the ability to multichannel, and sport is a great direction to go in, but I hate the fact that I won’t be able to see my favourite shows in HD. I also hate the we’re losing the great extra content on TenHD – some of my favourite shows are exclusive to TenHD.

  9. My reading of things is that we effectively lose Ten HD, both simulcast and breakaway. One HD will take it’s place, along with a down-converted simulcast.

    1 = One HD, 10 = Ten SD, 12 = One HD downconverted

  10. Obviously today’s article in The Age has forced Ten to reveal its plan for the new sports channel this early. Still it’s good news for sports fans.

  11. Questions, questions, questions…. the announcement / marketing of stuff like this is a work in progress and always leads to more qs than answers.

    One will air on Ch 1 in high def and be rebroadcast in SD on Ch 12, currently the home of TEN HD.

    No wonder there is confusion. Feel free to leave more qs which TV Tonight will endeavour to resolve when TEN provides better information.

  12. This is good news but regional areas will probably miss out again. Southern Cross Ten will have a ton of angry viewers if they do not offer these new channels soon!

    I guess the current Ten HD will either remain on channel 12 as a simulcast with some extra programs like now or they will move to the extra SD channel.

  13. Perhaps One HD will replace Ten HD on Channel 1 while the current Ten HD as we know it will stay on channel 12 (As it is simulcast on 1 and 12 at the moment, right?)

  14. Is that in addition to TEN HD? I really don’t want to lose TEN HD as it’s been the perfect outlet for lower rating quality shows: Veronica Mars, Torchwood, Smallville, Jericho. Plus I’d much rather watch some HD Docos in the afternoon then the other stuff.

  15. David, can you get a comment from Mr White about the HD confusion? Is it replacing TenHD, is it separate from TenHD, does it mean 2x HD channels… ta!

  16. Just saw the news, will this be country wide as we still don’t get Ten HD here in the Wide Bay Qld?

    Who really thinks this will make a big difference in Pay TV, the only thing I see happening is we might get even more new pay channels or cheaper rates for subscribing. I’ve been on Austar 10 years and now get a 10% discount next month, don’t know how long that will last.
