Thanks, Ron.

With all the attention on Nine News changes how can we not acknowledge the final bulletin by Ron Wilson on TEN News at Five?

With all the attention on Nine News changes this week how can we not acknowledge the final bulletin by Ron Wilson on TEN News at Five in Sydney this week?

Wilson wraps up 15 years co-hosting the bulletin with a number of female co-anchors.

“You have been a great mentor and a very generous man … we all appreciated our time working with you, me especially,” Deborah Knight said before Wilson tearfully replied: “Thank you, thank you very much.”

“Mate, when you drive out of the Channel TEN car park tonight Wilson look in the back seat, it’ll be me. I’m going to miss you mate, see ya,” said weatherman Tim Bailey.

A montage of some of his work was shown, with a message splashed across the screen saying Thanks Ron.

“Gosh I’m not gone yet,” Wilson said.

Wilson, who will be replaced by Bill Woods, will now move to hosting the station’s 6am news bulletin.

Sandra Sully will be Woods’ co-anchor while Deborah Knight is on maternity leave.

After 35 years in the business, Wilson says: “In 1983 I was 25 and read evening news with Katrina Lee. Management said I was too young and sent me to Good Morning Australia,” he said. He suspects his move now is for the opposite reason.

  1. Yeh i do not like bill wood nearly as much as ron wilson! I remember that bill would go on when Ron was away and always greatly disliked the news, I really hope they realise their error before it’s too late.

  2. so sad to see you go, ron.

you were a little ray of sunshine at the end of a working day.

won’t be watching bill – he has all the personality of an inanimate carbon rod – that hasn’t appeared on the simpsons.

  3. Ohh channel ten are wankers!!

How could they do that. He is the best person for news and they move him to a 6am time slot where myself and many others will never see him again. I’m gonna miss ya Ron and there were tears in my eyes watching that video clip 🙁

    You will be missed.
    ron wilson is ten news.

  4. I recall this news being posted some weeks ago & then vanishing from the site,so i assumed it was an error.
Then 10 were chopping & changing presenters nightly it seemed,so that was a little strange.
And sadly the truth appeared on 16/01/09.
Some television you can just count on,And that was Ron reading the news for me.He was great with Jessica (and what happened to you girl?) & Deborah has fitted in nicely (as would Sandra-always a pleasure).
But no more Ron is a very strange move by the powers that be.
10 has lost a lot of good readers over the years.I would go as far to say that 10’s readers were the pick of the bunch as far as news goes (and the reporters).Pleasant working enviroment perhaps?
A big shame guys,i too am not a fan of Bill Woods style (sorry) & i am positive this will reflect in your viewership.
I won’t get to see you in the morning Ron,so cheerio mate, you were the best.

    A loyal fan,John.

  5. Yeh so why with the move? Was it Ron’s choice? Cause this sort of makes me want to tape the 6am Ten news ev. morning instead of watching the 5pm. Ten news first at 5 is not the same without Ron.

  6. This is a big mistake! He brings a real quality to Ten’s News and a style that stands out from the Ken-Doll male newsreaders everywhere else (Seven excepted).

  7. Not only a bad decision, but one that fails to show even a modicum of sense.

All I can ask is, Why? What is the point? Bill Woods definitely isn’t a high profile journalist, so Ten cannot be making this decision with their ratings in mind. Ron Wilson is the 5pm news and he should stay there until he chooses to retire.

  8. i agree with redbullboy.i was so surprised when ten demoted Ron Wilson to the 6am bulletin as i feel he is one of ten’s best news readers by far.
Also, thanks for posting that 5 min clip as i missed that final bit on telly.

  9. I think this is an absolutely shocking move by Ten. Ron Wilson is one the best and most respected news readers in the entire country and he and he only should of decided when it was time to leave. I have been a long time viewer of the First at Five News and I think, especially in the few years, that Ten has put together a far better bulletin than Nine and Seven.

A highlight of my evening viewing has always been the banter between Ron and Tim Bailey and I just know it will not be same with Bill Woods in chair.

Thank you Ron for the last 15 years, you will indeed be missed.

  10. Good luck Ron after such a long and dedicated service it is disgraceful that he should be bumped to such an early timeslot I agree that bill woods is better as a sports presenter Ron should have stayed at 5pm I bet the 5pm ratings drop a bit from Monday

  11. Aww, Ron Wilson is Ten News to me. Literally, I’m 16 and he’s the only News at 5 Anchor I’ve known. He’ll be missed.

Kind of ironic to see people praising Ron Wilson and dissing Bill Woods compared to the “it’s the news not the presenter” mentality at the Ferguson/Overton post(s). Not to take anything away from Ron Wilson that is.

  12. I agree with Paul and R – I think Ron Wilson is an incredibly apt and respected journalist and his on-screen chemistry with his various co-anchors has always been evident. I have no idea what Ten was thinking when they decided to move him to 6am. Bill Woods will always be one of the “Sports Tonight” guys for me, despite him being moved to the actual Ten News team a while ago, and it is perhaps for that reason that I don’t really take Bill Woods seriously. That is not to suggest that sports related journalism is any less credible than other journalism, however seeing the montage of Ron at the end of the Ten news bulletin on friday night highlights just how much experience he brings to the 5pm news. While all the other networks are re-shaping their news teams, bringing in “fresher faces”, I would have thought that Ten could use this as an opportunity to capitalise on the experience of their news anchors, especially Ron Wilson. If Ten believes that Ron’s age is a hindrance, then the same should surely apply to Mal Waldron who co-anchors the Melbourne 5pm bulletin. Journalists like Ron Wilson and Mal Waldon bring much experience to Ten, and I am disappointed to see Ron moved to 6am.

  13. Think its atrocious the way he has been treated!!
id tell them where to stick the 6am shift and get a massive long service payout and retire….. maybe go into radio a bit more full time like Tim Webster.

Have never been a fan off Bill Woods in a news role…… He should stick to Sports.
