60 + 30 = 90 Minutes

Nine's 30th Anniversary special for 60 Minutes is now extra long, but it pushes other shows out later.

60-minutes-teamThis Sunday night as part of its 30th Anniversary, 60 Minutes has announced a 90 minute edition (!) to conclude at 9pm.

No doubt it was overflowing with many important stories and moments to squeeze into its special.

This means that CSI, CSI: Miami and Without a Trace are all pushed back by 30 minutes. In the case of Without a Trace, it’s certainly a late start and finish for a season premiere. It won’t end until midnight -on a school night, no less.

It’s entirely possible that Nine had planned a longer edition all along but held off the schedule change as a way of throwing off the opposition. But such programming changes can also throw off the audience, confused and aggravated.

Everybody wants to win Sunday…

  1. I thing we are over thinking this 60 Minutes name thing, Does Today Tonight only have stories from that day? Are all the stories on ACA current?

So 60 Minutes is having a longer version to the 30th Anv so what I probably won’t watch it anyway LOL

  2. Channel Nine think they’re so good at strategies when they’re really bad and manage so stuff everything up because of them. It doesnt make sense to call it 60 minutes now, call it 90 minutes or and hour and a half. It would be like putting Sunday Night, on any other night except that.

  3. I will be interested to see what 60 Minutes stories make the cut. If a Ramsay piece or the cringworthy Tom Cruise interview make it…I will reach for the remote.

The good days of investigative journalism on 60 Minutes were about 6 years ago. I think the amount of older stories in this special will back this notion up.

  4. This is another case of Nine being damned if they do and damned if they don’t. I’ve read comments from numerous bloggers both on this sites and numerous others, who have expressed their views in regards to 60 Mintues’ 30th Anniversary – More than 90% of bloggers wrote of their disgust that 60 Minutes was only marking such a landmark and significant achievement in Australian television history by a one hour program… Good on you 60! – You’ll need the extra minutes due to this being such a landmark occassion and achievement! So I for one (and I’m sure I’m only one of many) who will be extremely pleased with todays announcement, so I can excuse the overrun for this special occassion. Wishing you all the best for many years to come 60!

On a slightly off topic note though, WTF is wrong with Nine putting Without A Trace on at 10.30…?! – I am absolutely appualed with Nine’s programing decision concerning Without A Trace. Nine programmers you bloody idiots, wake up and smell the coffee you’re going to loose this year if you don’t pull your head out!

  5. I dont get how not announcing this extention would ‘throw off the opposition’. What’s the difference to any of the other networks if all of ch9’s programs are 30min later? Its not like ch7 or ch10 for example would change any part of their line-ups, just because of this, whether they knew a few weeks ago or not, i rekon anyway…
As for WAT, they’ve lost me as a viewer. Who in their right mind would stay up till midnight (and most likely a few minutes more!) just to watch it?? I see a encore on the horizon…

  6. stupid, stupid move

too late – people will just record these shows instead

they will win with this lineup on sunday, but it’s too much and it’s too late

    do this on a weeknight

  7. i think i would have been wiser to start 60min at 7pm so it leaves all shows beginning on time barring domestic blitz which would need replacing for the week. this way, instead of shifting 3 shows, they only move one and keep more people happy.

  8. Brodie, I don’t think it’s entirely a “ratings grab”. It has been going on for 30 years for goodness’ sake – how many stories is that to fit in?

  9. haha, what a stupid move. Everyone bags out the name ‘Sunday Night’, but atleast it lives up to it’s name!

Clearly a ratings grab by channel Nine, one I hope backfires. WAT at 11pm is an absolute disgrace!

David, so true, they compete against each other so much with constant schedule changes and “last minute” additons that is not the other networks that get annoyed, it’s the viewers. I dont recall the last time I watched anything on Nine, I think it was when they were airing new eps of 2.5 Men very early last year (April?)before the repeats began.

  11. If you’ve followed Media Watch for few years, you will know about the on going joke that 60 Minutes actually only goes for about 42 minutes without the ads.

Therefore, it will be ironic that the show might actually go for the full 60 minutes for the first time this Sunday!

  12. Without a Trace should not be 10.30 Channel Nine!! Move it to a 9.30 slot!

I am appalled at such mistreatment and waste of a show that consistently does 1 million at 9.30!!

  13. My Epg still shows 60 minutes as 60 minute show. My printed guide still shows Singing bee and ramsay on Thursday night. No wonder 9 is losing – noone knows (or even cares) what is on and when.

I half expected it to go over by 10-15 minutes, at least they tell us 90 minutes, but reckon it’ll finish at 9.10 or later.

  14. Somewhat symmetric, even if somewhat ironic 😉

If they have had to somehow fit in coverage of the fires and the very significant events of the day, I’m just as glad they’ve extended and not reduced the content of the 30th anniversary special.
