Seven has made a switch to its Saturday night line-up after just one week of ratings.
UK shows Not Going Out and Gavin & Stacey, which aired in Sydney and Brisbane, will not return this week. Plans for them to screen in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth are now shelved.
Instead it’s bringing in movie repeats with Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit from 8:40pm and Stuck On You at 10:50pm. Movies will continue the week after too.
Seven also removes Fawlty Towers and moves Vicar of Dibley back to 8pm (if you’re really hankering for more of Basil Fawlty it’s back in at 4:00pm Sunday March 1). What a Carry On, slated for 10:40pm, is also out.
It’s a shame Gavin & Stacey didn’t get a better shot, but only 86,000 sampled the show in Sydney, trailing RocKwiz on 100,000. Not Going Out took 120,000 in Sydney.
Seven finished Saturday night in third place behind the ABC.

I was looking forward to the second episode of Gavin and Stacey.
Really enjoyed the first.
Have now placed my DVD order and can watch commercial free.
I am so annoyed. I have heard great things about Gavin & Stacey from the UK, it has won lots of awards and was delighted to see if on in Australia. It wasn’t well advertised but got great reviews in the papers. Why drop it after one episode? Just move it to a better time. Channel Seven should be ashamed of itself.
Gavin and Stacey needs to be on ABC imo
Wonder if anyone has ever known someone with a ratings box? How are the people selected? And why do they not include HD channels, etc?? Its all very mysterious…
thanks for compliment RichoTB.
I still have huge doubts on “how networks rely on Ratings based on small sample of per determined households.
Iwould have thought wider audience makes better choices than relying on what is it 500 or 1000 people (not that networks tell us, total amount of souls that decide what we watch)
Even worse when we know that what works in sydney might not in Melb and Perth folk have different taste to NT.
Its 3000+ households, similar to overseas models. The networks own OzTAM, they are capable of effecting change if they re not happy with it. At any rate, all shows are on the same level playing ground.
I quite liked Gavin and Stacey. It had a lot of potential, but you just needed to let it grow.
I hadn’t seen either of these UK shows before, but I’m sorry I have now.
In both, the lead actor/comic has irritated the hell out of me in everything else
I’ve seen them in. They play the same character type in each case, so
I should have known better. 🙁
I had hoped for better, but IMHO the shows deserved the low ratings,
Sorry if you disagree. Comedy is so highly subjective.
At least they showed the Fawlty Towers episode where Basil belted up his car. Ever since the first showing centuries ago it’s been the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on TV. I was in fits of laughter on Sat Night, as was my nearly 8 year old, who is developing an appreciation of UK humour. Won’t be showing him The Young Ones just yet though.
Maybe they could put it on 7HD instead?
Really. I thought “good on 7” for doing something different on Saturday nights – what a change to the usual crap movies! Why could they not have stuck with it for a while – its not like Saturday is a big ratings night in any case.
Look around for other sources…
I was wondering how long Fawlty Towers would last but really ch7 Saturday night is not doing much for me, SciFi and fast tracked BSG 😀
I knew this would happen as soon as I read the Airdate: Gavin & Stacey, Not Going Out article. It really is sad that commercial free to air television has come to this so unfortunately the only way to watch shows like this is 1) if it is on the ABC or SBS, 2) if it is on Foxtel, 3) on DVD or 4) by “other means”.
LOL Zambora, you raise good points. Its so silly how a network will air a show in like one city or state, then decide it sucks and cancel it without giving it a chance nationwide. Come on, networks. Lift your game. To bone two series without giving them the chance is just silly. Maybe Seven could try Samantha Who in the Saturday comedy slots? Or even give it a slot after HIMYM, who knows, it might become a hit.
Low figure for Sydney viewing – what do Sydneysiders want to watch on Sat night ?
and do Sydney & Brisbane decide viewing habits of rest of Oz.
Seven – you could give it a chance on national level.
what next -sample a show to Nar Nar Goon only and it they like it, they it is on.
No way. 🙁
Not Going Out was the funniest show on tv last week and now it’s gone.
Let’s hope ABC2 gets it and they can pair it up with Peep Show.
Television is dead.
Wow, Channel 7 are awesome. No promotion, listing it as on and then not bothering to say it wasn’t blah blah blah. Sigh. Maybe SBS or ABC will pick it up.
Gosh, I wonder why people download things?
I never understood why such tripe like Fawlty Towers was given a go in primetime.
Kath & Kim teamed with The Vicar of Dibley is a perfect combination.
Don’t know anything about the other shows.
Grrrrrrr I liked Gavin and Stacey.
BBC Australia, you mean. With the interspersing of BBC ID’s and UKTV ID’s during summer, I am seriously thinking that they will do the changeover soon. They (BBC International) own UKTV, Why don’t they rebrand it?
No suprise, but FFS! I wanted to check this show out, but we didnt even get it here in Adelaide. Why bother even buying the rights to it if they were going to show it at a dreadful time. Looks like I will have to obtain the show from another source…
One Word…. Pathetic!!!
Does anyone really think some repeat film is going to get Better ratings than a couple of New shows….. Really????
Hopefully 7 handballs them onto Foxtel(UK-TV for instance).
No surprise here…
A new show in a crap timeslot with no promotion whatosever in just two markets does poorly? Who would have thought!
Sister Act 2? Seven are turning into Channel 10 with their “range” of movies. I’ll call dibs on the Sound of Music being Saturday after,
