The Simpsons renewed to Season 22

“Best. 20 Years. Ever." says FOX as it renews TV's longest running animated series again.

simpsonsxThe Simpsons, already the hit the longest-running animated series in primetime TV history, has been picked up for 2 more seasons to a staggering 493 episodes.

Gunsmoke holds the record as the longest-running primetime narrative series, on the air from 1955 to 1975 with 635 episodes.

With this 22nd season renewal, The Simpsons, which debuted in 1990, will easily become the longest running.

The pickup came after 20th Century Fox TV closed a new deal with James L. Brooks’ company Gracie Films. The voice cast was already secured for two more years as part of their most recent contract negotiations.

“Best. 20 Years. Ever.,” is how FOX announced the news. Hard not to agree.

(and yes we know the pic is a parody from one ep….)

  1. yeah the pic is how they originally look sback in the shorts…

and personally i don’t think the past few years have been all that bad, what we really should worry about is family guys pathetic 6min jokes that take up 30% of the episode just to fill time.

  2. The shows where they show how the characters might be in the future are always interesting. I wish they’d start aging the kids naturally. Show them going to High school, graduating etc….Hey they did it with Pebbles & Bamm Bamm.

  3. Very interesting R2C didn’t know old eps were edited. But I agree with you it’s been a sad,sad show since series 10 or so. I saw a promo for a new ep the other day & I cringed it was so bad.

The only good thing here is it will take over the horrible Gunsmoke as the longest running show.

  4. The show should be axed if its creators really cared about its legacy but frankly it is too late, the last ten years have been rubbish. I cant tell you how much I love the first ten years but it sadens me that it still exists in its dumbed down state. The writing used to be so clever. Americans hate satire yet this show was able to become a success. Yes the show cant constantly peak but surely when it is this bad someone would put the thing to sleap. Reamains as a truly uninspired show that now lags even beihind its imitators like Family Guy. Shame on its 22nd season.

  5. i guess this is the wrong place to post but what would u think in one of these new freeview channels ie 7SC2 or 9SD2 , would show family guy, american dad, king of the hill would u watch it over the new simpsons on 10 if they were on at the same time

  6. David – not only is The Simpsons not the longest running prime-time animated series in history (try Sazae-san) but Gunsmoke is not the longest running ‘prime-time narrative series’ whatever that is supposed to mean.

Gunsmoke is the longest running western (i.e. cowboys and indians) in history – but there are many drama series which have been running far longer and have more episodes, Doctor Who to name just one.

  7. Considering the global revenue that The Simpsons generates, FOX would be morons not to renew it for as long as possible, regardless of how much the ratings dip in the U.S.

Sure, The Simpsons is nothing like it was in its prime, but apart from the abysmal mess that was seasons 14-16, The Simpsons is currently on par with Season 11, which isn’t too bad, but it’s certainly far from the series’ best.

And by the way David, the show premiered in December 1989, and the picture is not a parody. It was how The Simpsons originally looked like when the show first premiered as a series of minute-long shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show back in 1987 (which was spun-off into its own half-hour television series as we know today).

  8. The Simpsons “Jumped the Shark” (or rather the Gator)
years ago. It still has bitingly satirical lines (occasionally), but you
have to watch a lot of banal stuff to get those momentary pleasures.
People are just comfortable with the show now…it’s effectively a
TV pacifier, that you just want to be there regardless of how
good or innovative it may be. You can’t expect constant peak
performance after all of this time… that’s just reality.:-(

  9. Good news. The Simpsons started to put more emphasis on zanyness, making Homer an ****hole, and in general becoming more like Family Guy et al a decade ago. But it has still remained funny for its entire run and is certainly not “tragic”. Definitely an icon of television that I could not live without.

  10. I don’t know if people have said this before but I think the Simpsons went down hill in roughly their tenth year, GWB became president and the animation became computer generated and not cell. The writing has been bad for a long while now. This transition seems to have taken place when Rupert Murdoch got a stronger hold of Fox. Murdoch was a subject of ridicule with his voice impersonated in an earlier episode and years later he does his own voice an episode that lacks the deprecation of the former. The Simpsons first ten years is truly a great program with excellent satirical writing. What we have now is a machine that refuses to die. I also notice plenty of dialogue has been removed and replaced from older episodes such as a negative reference to toy manufacturer Mattel and joke about cabal TV making genitals withered and unable to be used for sex. The program has become what it hates. Wishy-washy time filler. A shame when this program truly broke ground and influenced a generation (my generation). The voice actors don’t like it anymore and god knows who writes it these days. Celebrity cameos all the time, no longer a surprise or with good purpose. The soul is gone.

It is a shame that a program once so cutting edge has become so mediocre.

  11. the simpsons is not what it onces was but i think its what FOX is all about, which is good, i think it also helps FOXtels fox 8

+ it will be in HD, o wait to 10HD anymore, just have to wait unilt FOX8 HD starts, last season when 10 was showing then on a tuesday night, they where on fox8 on the sunday, ill wait till the following weekend to see them in HD

would u wait to see them in HD on sunday?
but on the other hand ii would just watch both

  12. The Simpsons past its prime long ago, but the show is far from bad, there are worse programs on the air, its not longer the witty satire it once was but its still entertaining and deserves a place on air. Its a TV icon, not just on FOX but around the world….

  13. The new ones aren’t as good… but they are still worth watching. They need to concentrate on stories a bit more – it was the stories/situations that made the classics so good.

  14. sadly, another two years will further dilute its legacy. thank goodness for repeats of the first eight seasons, when it was funny, touching, scathing and by far the best show on television.

  15. The Simpsons are an embarrasment now & it rightly should have stopped after the 9th or 10th season. At it’s peak in the ’90s it is one of the very best shows ever made and I can watch these eps endlessly, but for the last 9 years or so it’s been tragic.

  16. Simpsons can still be amusing. What annoys me however it’s now sort of at the point, where more often that not, if I turn it on, I don’t get a good episode. They are too diluted in the poorer written ones.

Maybe others are fine, but as someone that literally has been watching the simpsons since it started on Aus tv, i really have noticed the shift in the way the episodes are written which annoys me.
