ONE debut draws mixed reactions

The launch of ONE HD has drawn a lot of comment. They are angry in regionals, divided in cities, and pumped for free sports.

onefanThe launch of ONE HD last night has been met with mixed enthusiasm.

While die-hard sports fans are relishing the prospect of free 24 hour sports, others are confused. Regional viewers are downright angry.

In Tasmania Senator Guy Barnett has made an official complaint to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about the network’s advertising of its new high-definition sports channel, ONE.

Network advertisements in Tasmania are believed to have promoted ONE but with a disclaimer that it was unavailable to Tassie viewers.

Senator Barnett said advertising the channel in Tasmania was therefore misleading and deceptive and in breach of section 52 of the Trade Practices Act.

“The advertising in Tasmania has given consumers the impression that from today they would be entitled to enjoy this free sports-only channel,” he said.

“As it stands today, TDT is still negotiating with Network 10 for the rights to ONE,” Tasmanian Digital Television General Manager Stephen Giles said.

“I can’t commit to a timeframe about when negotiations will wrap up.”

Regional readers of TV Tonight are similarly outraged:

“This is f*****g bull**it!! I like many other regional victorians, have been counting down the days til ONE HD started. But when I realised on the day it was released that it wont be out for another couple of months I was pi**ed off. Why is it that we always get left out. I for one think it’s a disgrace that we have to wait longer than metro areas to recieve the channel.” Cullen.
“My phone is ringing off the hook now with people wanting HD equipment set up for tonight. Next week my phone will be ringing off the hook with people saying I cant get one HD why? The answer will be ring SC 10 and complain to them for false advertising.” Jason.
“The goverment sould take there licence off them as we were told to support HD TV by buying HD TV’s but there is nothing to watch on the channels a total wast of money to up date as we will never see HD TV in Wollongong.” – Thomas
“I want Wollongong to be able to get it, I can get Channel 9 Sydney and Seven Sydney wish I could pick up TEN, I want ONE” -Ryan.
“I just watched on SC10 Newcastle’s news – which is Sydneys’ news – the news about ONE HD starting from tonight with absolutely no mention of the fact the regionals will not be receiving it.” – Andrew B

There were sports fans who were confused about some of the programming on ONE:

“As an AFL supporter in Sydney I was really looking forward to the launch of ONE HD. Then they show swimming in Sydney instead of the biggest home and away match in history. What’s the point?” -Matt
“ONE’s website says ‘Thanks to the introduction of ONE, Network TEN’s new 24-hour free-to-air sports channel, we now have the opportunity to play sport live – whatever time of the day or night the event occurs.’ Well the first program on ONE is AFL which will only be shown live in Melbourne, I guess there saying they have the opportunity but they wont take it.” – Mac.
“I’m still perplexed at the decision not to show Richmond V Carlton tonight in Brisbane/Sydney…Who watches swimming unless its the Olympics?” -Ryano
“Why put sport on an extra channel only to delay the broadcast?”- MRB

Others aren’t happy about the loss of other HD programming:

“Well, it’s all well and good, but come 11.30pm tonight after the news where I’d normally watch a little bit of Letterman, and all I get is the ONE broadcast of the AFL tonight… what’s the point of that? I wanted to watch 10 tonight not ONE” -Sharpy.
“What’s the point of having a HD TV and shooting Channel TEN shows such as Neighbours, us dramas and a lot more in HD but I cant watch them in HD anymore – so long TEN HD, so sad.” -Abdullah
“…Also, when The Simpsons HD episodes make it over here, will they even mention that they’re HD??…. seems like a big waste to me” -What Tha

Some viewers are sceptical that the channel was propped up by sports that weren’t actually filmed in high definition. Others were surprised to find out that ONE SD would not simulcast ONE HD when events were also on TEN. Instead a static image directed viewers to its other channels.

But there are those who support the switch:

“…sport isn’t my cup of tea, but kudos to TEN for embracing multichannelling and realising that niche programming is what will make it a success.” -Timmy
“As long as One has ads for One and not TEN, I can see this channel doing well. It is great to see a FTA channel actually getting their act together.” – Pete
“TEN is the first, and only, network to actually care about multi-channeling. Sure sport 24hours isn’t the most interesting choice for the most amount of people, but it’s a start, and I believe it will get better as time goes on” – Paull
“I love my sport, and will watch it whenever I can, so this channel is a godsend to me.” – AJ

ONE is expected to launch on regional SC10 mid year.

  1. I love it! Crystal clear picture, audio is a bit twitchy but that’s possibly because I have it running off an old tv capture card on the pc. Otherwise it’s all good. The one minor gripe is the tv guide’s listing are way off.

  2. i saw the ONESD static image today because the F1 was on 1 and 10, they had better hope that sport fans are actually watching this stuff live and get to see this redirection image, because if they are recording it how are they to really know, the EPG and the guides all list the program as being on channel 12, so a person would think it is ok to set the recorder, then get home and discover nothing but this image. i understand that they are doing this to enhance the quality of the signal they are putting out, but they should really change what the EPG says to let people know there will be nothing on at that time.

ps @ craig, 10SD did not break away from your precious sport for the news, i know because mum was trying to watch the qld news on channel 10, i checked the EPG and saw there was no news at all on channel 10 so switched to 7.

  3. Most of it is simulcast David but at 5pm the main 10 SD goes to the news here in QLD, leaving the rest of the coverage on ONE HD cutting off those who don’t have it, thus no airing of Australia’s favorite motor sport for a lot of viewers!

I know it’s a non championship round but it feels like ch10 couldn’t care since they don’t have the rights to the V8s any more, they didn’t even bother airing the first race delayed or any of the highlights.

Maybe if we were not in DLS still then QLD would have got the V8s as the coverage would have started an hour earlier.

Ch10 has 11 hours of coverage over 2 days, ONE HD has 22 hours over 3 days, so of course we will only see about half of what is on offer!

  4. No I’m pi**ed!

We go no V8Supercars on Saturday, no race one and race two is 15 minutes after ch10 goes to the news so regional viewers miss out on seeing that because we have no access to ONE HD yet. I’d bet that majority of viewers tune into the F1 to see the V8s and a vast part of the audiance gets left out.

I sit here all day waiting for them and nothing!

Can someone tell me if the V8s were on ONE HD?

Is this what we can expect from TEN and future sports coverage having parts cut and not aired on the regular TEN coverage???

  5. I am a die hard sports fan, but I am not impressed with channel one. It was advertised as a completely new channel, but so far it has the same crap that 10 has on it. If it didn’t have one HD written in the corner I would think that I have two channel 10 stations.

There is an endless amount of sport out there but 10 can’t seem to find it and when they do put something decent on, channel 10 has the same thing on. So we have not gained anything at all except for a couple of hours at night.

  6. The F1 just started and SC10 had a notice at the bottom of the screen that HD would not be available and apologizing for the inconvenience, they’ve been working on this for months if not years you would hope they could have to running with the rest of the country!

BTW I think it’s lame that they go to a static image instead of just airing it on the 2nd SD channel!

  7. Mickey this is referenced in the story above.

“Others were surprised to find out that ONE SD would not simulcast ONE HD when events were also on TEN. Instead a static image directed viewers to its other channels.”

  8. Currently as it stands.

Channel 10 have not introduced a new channel. All they have done is rename 10HD to ONE.

ONE SD is showing the same content as ONE

Therefore no new channel has been introduced. Just more sports over tv soaps and movies in HD etc…

If channel 10 decide to add more content to ONE SD in the future thats their business. Currently as it stands. Channel 10 are not broadcasting an extra channel.

The winners are the sports fans The losers are the rest of the viewers who cant get foxtel or internet to watch something decent
and the country viewers who the government and tv station dont know that they exist, because they can suck more money from the city slickers.

  9. Something to add to all the drama.
Was nice to launch OneHD last night with the big AFL match… but Ch 12 (OneHD in SD) wasn’t ‘available’ last night during the footy broadcast… How stupid is that?? Wonder if you could find out why David??

  10. David did you see the interview with GM of Sports at Channel Ten on Sky News program Media Week on Wednesday. David White I think his name was.
When he was asked about the showing of ONE in both HD & SD, he gave the impression that they were ‘experimenting’ with the channel in both formats and that they are always looking for ways to deliver content.
It will be interesting to see if they eventually drop on of the channels in favor of a general entertainment channel or other similiar service.
If what he was saying is correct, then it makes everything that Channel 10 has done so far even more confusing.

  11. Thanks Ryano, hopefully that’s the case. I can handle not seeing it live, but a little later on the same night would definitely suit me 🙂

  12. ryan, why don;t you explain why it should be on 11 or better still, why is it so important. It’s a number on list you can program in your favourites.

Give up Rob. A lost cause that one

  13. Why was TEN given the rights to the ANZ Championships when only those who live in capital cities can access ONE? I’ve noticed comments from other people in regional areas, who are saying they cannot watch ONE. We have GWN and WIN here in the north-west of WA. Looking at the TV guide for next Saturday, April 4th, there is no mention of the ANZ Championship on WIN. Last year the ANZ Championship was broadcast on Foxtel. WIN should be broadcasting the ANZ Championships since we are unable to watch ONE. Not good enough WIN.

  14. @ Jason
Given the amount of money Ten paid for the IPL, it would be fair to say it will be shown in late prime time on channel 10.
The difference is on One the first game will be live around 8.30pm Eastern time. I doubt Ten will show games until after the late news/sports tonight on weekdays. Maybe simulcast on weekends.

  15. How much of a delay on One HD are people talking about? HD can be delayed for quite a few seconds to enable the picture and sound to catch up to each other due to the processing of the signals. If anyone has ever had the opportunity to stand in the presentation department of a television station you will see all the outputs Analogue, SD Digital & HD being broadcast slightly in delay of each other. Was ONE HD delayed more than that?

  16. Don’t expect any action from the goverement bry soon. The minister for Communications is too busy creating an Internet filtering system. *off topic* At least Australia is learning something from China and that is how to block Internet traffic. /*off topic*
