Hurrah. David Chase will create a miniseries about the early days of Hollywood, A Ribbon of Dreams.

reelHere’s some good news to offset those gloomy times.

Sopranos creator David Chase is returning to HBO for a miniseries about the early days of Hollywood, A Ribbon of Dreams.

The series will revolve around a cowboy and a mechanical engineer who form an unlikely producing partnership in 1913, making them pioneers in motion pictures. It will follow the characters as they first work for pioneer filmmaker D.W. Griffith and then eventually with marquee names such as John Ford, John Wayne, Raoul Walsh, Bette Davis and Billy Wilder. It will track the growth of Hollywood from the age of silent Westerns to the golden age of talkies and beyond. Across the latter part of the 20th century, it will shift to the main characters’ offspring.

The title comes from Orson Welles’ description of film as “a ribbon of dreams.”

So far there is no word on how many episodes nor when the series is expected. Chase will also direct the first few episodes.

Earlier this week TCM announced it is developing a 10-part documentary series on the early days of Hollywood: Moguls and Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood.

And while we’re at it, hands up who remembers Moviola?
