Now, a same sex smooch for Neighbours

It's the year of soapie kisses, as Neighbours revisits a same sex kiss, this time between Donna and Sunny.

neighboursCrank up the conservative lobby, we’re going in for the kiss again.

Following Home and Away’s much-talked about same sex kiss, now Neighbours is set to re-visit the same territory.

Later this month, Donna (Margot Robbie) and Sunny (Hany Lee Choi) share what producers bill as an “impulse kiss” after a love letter scandal in a continuing storyline is exposed.

Neighbours will venture into the storyline with a G rating, unlike Home and Away‘s PG classification.

The ACMA classification makes no discernment between heterosexual or homosexual expression -a kiss is just a kiss, it’s all about context.

Of course it isn’t the first time Neighbours has visited the idea. In 2004 Lana Crawford (Bridget Neval) developed an affection for Sky Mangel (Stephanie McIntosh) leading to a stolen kiss. British soaps are treading on the same turf with regularity.

Gay characters also appear in Out of the Blue screening at 5:30pm on TEN.

Neighbours has already taken some criticism recently for having a teen pregnancy storyline.

Hopefully there won’t be quite so many kneejerk reactions this time around.

  1. what_tha, apparently Hany Lee was one of the finalists from the Dolly contest (which was responsible for Sam Clark as well as Donna’s siblings) and they brought her back for a seperate audition and gave her the role soon after. They probably could find better actors, but they tend to go for good looks over acting skill unfortunately, and Dolly throw good looking teenagers in their laps.

  2. I’m sorry, but Hany Lee Choi is not one of the best actors on the show… can’t they find anyone better… I mean, surely the applications for the show are endless… (needless to say, I just don’t care about the girl-girl kiss… it really shouldn’t be newsworthy)

  3. Lesbian hookups on tv dramas are becoming the norm. I can think of a long list that goes back to Ellen, Wllow on Buffy and the red haired doc on ER, as well as the aforemention aussie soap starlets. All on the list were previously seen as heterosexual and every one is female. When are we going to see some man on man action in aussie soaps?
( By the way, I thought it was Ringo , that was meant to be gay, not Zeke.)

  4. Donnas the best on Neighbours.. shes the brightest teen on that show, the rest are always in fights or have some depressive issue going on in their lives.. at least Donna remains positive when she has them!

  5. Donna has already declared herself as a bisexual, so it’s not just a little kiss, they do have some sort of homosexual character on Neighbours.

It’s good to see that they’re now doing something about Donna’s bisexuality. They got her to say some quip to Bridget about playing both sides, but they never carried it through.

You never know…..they could go into a relationship. Sunny’s an idiot who doesn’t know what she wants, and well Donna’s bisexual. It could happen. Maybe a month from now we’ll see all this adverts saying ‘first homosexual couple on a Soapie ~ they go further than a kiss!!!’

  6. Ohh, and being a story involving Donna, it will just be some stupid random unfunny thing like every other scene she is in, talk about being an over developed sterotype character from a US teen drama.

  7. Why does a same sex kiss need a higher classification, or need to cause a “stir”? Are these shows being made to send back in time to the conservative 1950’s? C’mon, its no big deal.

  8. Apparently only lesbians live in Summer Bay and on Ramsey Street. Where’s the two blokes kissing? I’d particularly like to see Todd Lasance pucker up.

  9. they are desperate big time here. the show is in the toilet and they bring out another gay story line. pathetic. time to cann this show for once and for all

  10. Groan- why is this news? Neighbours do this every now and then.

Also Jack don’t get your hopes up. It won’t be a gay storyline – it will be one confused kiss and then they’ll go back to guys. Just like with Pepper and Rosie.

These shows keep thinking they are really good for dealing with homosexuality issues but all they do is show one kiss. If they were really serious they would actually have continuing gay characters in relationships.

  11. Apparently they toyed with the idea of Zeke being gay but apparently it was too hard to navigate through the classifications etc around it. However I wasn’t aware of this, guess it mustn’t be that hard now to show a gay kiss – its just clearly a bunch of straight male storyliners in a room 😛 jks. lol.

  12. With girls kissing they are pandering to straight male lesbian fantasies. When they show 2 guys kissing then something will have been achieved.
