Gallery: THIS afternoon

It has the coffee mugs, the open neck shirt, the newsreader at the desk joining in the chats, the email and SMS input...it's brekkie in the arvo.

Nine’s new arvo offering THIS afternoon kicks off with banter about spelling, celebrity gossip and updates on the death of Michael Jackson.

Just make sure you know you haven’t woken up and find you’re watching brekkie telly…

This post updates.

  1. Do they realise they are breaking the rules by not showing Programs suitable for your 5 to 15 year old after school.I mean a News Bulletin of all things,Ten is even worse with Bold and the Beautiful and unless you have a Pay Tv Service with access to Disney or Nickelodeon Your Other Choice is worse with the ABC Kids offerings.
I don’t know about elementary to Year 10 High School Kids today but when I was there age It was Looney Tunes Channel Niners later known as C’Mon Kids or Wombat that defined what a kid came home to and for a while we also had Wonderworld screening in the same timeslot.

    1. Franz while it’s gallant to want kids programming in the arvo, they are certainly not breaking the rules. ACMA allows for flexible allocation of children’s content over a 3 year period.

  2. Hi im Olivia and im 15 from newcastle,NSW. Today (6th July) i watched “This Afternoon for the first time. As i am a huge fan of Michael Jackson, i was listening to that part of the news closely and was dissapointed to hear “Katrina” state: “his fans are as wacko as jacko”. This upset me very much. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion on Michael, but not on national television, as it’s not professional, and would upset a lot of people. I’m not sure if i am going to watch this again, as it has affended me.

  3. I would hate to be a school kid, I remember coming home & watching A-Mazing, Loony Toons and Wipeout, now its all bloody news and trash related news.

  4. @Kenny i hear your point, so lets give it time to find it feet…personally i dont think we need to see one news at 430 then another one at 6pm…Anyway, kids programing is the 430 slot…and yes i have heard of Masterchef…. infact i heard it from the UK version anyway you have a point, mine is lay off on all the bagging…its getting tiredsome

  5. Red and Orange seem to be as overused on television sets as blue was back in the ’80s and ’90s. Trouble with red is that it makes the presenters faces glow and seem so harsh. You only have to look at how much softer Tracy’s appearance seemed on ACA when she presented away from the usual set.

It’s obvious they are producing THIS afternoon on a shoestring budget. Everything is re-hash of news that has already been discussed on morning television and talkback radio all day. It reminded me of The Catch-Up- cheap chat. Live at Five at least had dedicated reporters and producers bringing something fresh to afternoon television. Won’t waste my time with this again. TV will stay off until 6pm now that Nine have this as sloppy seconds and Ten persist with Mr Charisma By-pass Bill.

  6. Camo, you’re missing the point. No one is against locally-produced programs (“locally” not necessarily meaning “networked”), but if viewers are expected to watch then do a half decent job. This show is a poor copy of Channel 7’s morning shows. The colours, the format…except for the chemistry between hosts. Anyone at Nine who thinks TA is “fresh” or “Innovative” is dreaming. Be innovative and different and people will watch. Heard of “Masterchef”? Nothing on Monday’s show was new. Even the “news” was a day old.

  7. Just how much news can one watch?Nine be sensible, put Mark back at 6pm,do away with the 4.30pm news altogether, remove Hotseat & make a juicy early evening soap as was rumored sometime back (Young Doctors) & watch your viewing improve.
p.s how many host do you need & what bright spark came up with the catchy title?Plain old “News” is much more professional sounding.
I just don’t understand programmers.I mean what were 10 thinking with the Bill Woods thing.Absolutely devoid of personality & no chemistry whatsoever between co hosts.Ron i aways watch you when you come on at 11am.

  8. I do remember Live at 5 with Terry Willesee and Jo Pearson back in the Eighties.

That Show did a lot worse than the Looney Tunes and Bugs Bunny Cartoons It Replaced.Needlessly to say we were back to those within a few months

  9. Showboat, I think you are referring to the demise of Seven’s last local investment in Brisbane, Local Edition, which had Melissa Downes, (who went to Nine) and Peter Ford hosting.

If Nine has any brains, they would have had the people who were left QTQ sign deals, that if TA failed, they would have their jobs back. But if Extra were revived, 9 would either have to recruit Rick Burnett back (like Readings), or chuck Bruce Paige in the chair (like what was supposed to happen with Foord!) to win back the lost audience.

The critical flaw with the decline of Local Edition in my eyes, sadly, was that 7 Brisbane actually promised a second try, at a proper Extra competitor when the program wound up, but never went through with it.
