Tracy Grimshaw’s right of reply

Tracy Grimshaw admits she was "absolutely miserable" at bullying comments by Gordon Ramsay, and responds with a classy, succinctly-worded editorial.

tg6Tracy Grimshaw responded to comments by Gordon Ramsay last night opening A Current Affair with a sterling editorial in which she admitted to being “absolutely miserable.”

“I have no idea what prompted his outburst,” she said, “which continued yesterday and again today.

“We’ve not spoken and I have not responded until now.”

Responding to his publicist’s “damage control” comments, Grimshaw clarified that she has no relationship with the outspoken chef.

“We have no relationship at all. I’ve played along with him in interviews because it’s entertaining and that’s my job. But I walk away afterwards and I don’t think about him again.”

Grimshaw said she respected a request to not question Ramsay about his private life.

“But it appears with Ramsay respect is a one way street.”

Grimshaw said she was hurt by the comments, supposedly funny, when likened to an ‘old, ugly pig.’

“How is that funny, exactly? And worse, it’s not even witty.”

In her succinctly worded response Tracy Grimshaw said she considered not responding at all, but that bullying had to be addressed.

“He made some very clear and uninformed comments about (my private life). Obviously Gordon Ramsay thinks that any woman who doesn’t find him attractive must be gay. For the record, I don’t. And I’m not.”

Due to Ramsay’s high profile, the exchanges have already begun to attract press coverage in the UK and the US, as have last night’s comments.

Grimshaw’s classy performance follows her editorialising on the Matthew Johns / NRL scandal and an interview for which she was widely praised.

Although ACA trails Today Tonight nationally, it is forthright performances like this which will see it and Grimshaw win renewed respect. Seven meanwhile is sending Matt White to Dancing with the Stars.

Still, none of this has been about chasing ratings so much as right of reply to Ramsay’s apparently unprovoked sense of humour.

  1. Tracey Grimshaw you are a disgrace to Australian television as you have misused your role as a news reporter for a desperate grab of ratings and for your own smelly personal issues! I will never watch your joke of a show based on sensationalism trash journalism ever again!!! The ‘Today’ show has also proven that you can’t touch one of ours as they have all as well closed ranks behind Tracey’s behind in support! They all together need to bow their heads in shame together with the crew from the ABC, but at least they knew when to give up! This current trash television will be in our faces at least until midday tomorrow unfortunately. I know what you are thinking? Ok, I won’t watch Tracey’s attempt at an informative program … anymore or the Today show for that matter. Instead I will attempt to use my time more productively, like training for a triathlon or learning how to cook a four course meal for 2! Gordon has at least given something back to society. Well Tracey you still have time left to do the same! Go to the Gym and retire from television all together! And while you are there you can take the one they so call ‘Rove’ as well with you and together do something for this nation… P@%S Off!!! We can clearly see what you are worth out of 10, nothing / zero, sorry, no Michelin Star for you!

  2. Such a classy and dignified response from Tracey – she’s Nine’s best journo and one of the best in the country – shame they can’t beef up ACA to match her credentials.

  3. old grimace felt miserable did she? i guess she’s tasted what she puts people through most nights of the week. fronting a show which bullies people and edits the hell out of footage to get the desired result of humiliating them for entertainment.

luckily for grimace, unlike her victims, she can give herself the right of reply and acts like a petulant child when the blow back hits. being in the public eye she should have a hide thicker than this, one more akin to her leathery old skin.

  4. Do I really care? No. I don’t watch Ramsey and I also don’t watch ACA. There’s too much fuss about this subject to propel 2 people ahead that perhaps don’t deserve it.

  5. Gordon Ramsy is not a nice person at all. I can’t believe the comments he said. I’m glad tracy cleared things up, and I think noone deserves the kind of treatment she got.

  6. I may not like Tracy, but Ramsay had no right saying what he did and he is just a bully. He just like’s to use shock tactics hence all his outburst and language that is his clam to stardom

  7. Neon Kitten – I’m not sure your comment is really justified. Yes, Ramsay made those comments in a forum which had an audience of just a few thousand people (not a few hundred as you suggest), however he would have known that would have likely been media and news journalists there to report on his performance and on him generally. While his comments were made in front of a few thousand people directly therefore, he would have known they would have been relayed to a few million.

You suggest that a proper journalist would have had Ramsay back on camera and confronted him about it. How do you know 9 and ACA didn’t approach Ramsay to appear on the program again? In any event, I think Grimshaw’s editorial reply was “proper journalism”. She addressed Ramsay’s comments in an intelligent and honest way and she showed the professionalism and integrity that we have come to respect her for.

  8. So Ramsay makes some (admittedly, typically cheeky) remarks at a cooking session attended by a few hundred people, and Grimshaw’s “right of reply” is to an audience of millions?

A proper journalist wanting to set the record straight would have gotten Ramsay back on camera and confronted him about it.

But this is ACA, and Grimshaw, as the show’s representative, has zero right to preach about ethics and respect for private life. Nine might be trying to pitch Grimshaw as the “serious journalist” that’s going to fix ACA, but let’s face it, the show is the same old pig swill it’s been for years.

    Karma’s a bitch.

  9. Tracy, you are a beautiful and talented lady.
You have worked hard and long to be who and what you are and I’m sure you will be supported by the Australian public.

These days I don’t watch A Current Affair very often and never watch G Ransey because he’s a foul mouthed control freak and a coward.!!

    Good Luck Tracy

  10. I really like Tracey Grimshaw. I know that changing the focus of ACA will not necessarily bring in viewers but it would make it a more respected program.

ACA need to shift the program from fluff editorial pieces on grocery brands/price savings etc and move back into issues affecting the general publics day to life, issues that are wide-spread in the community and hard hitting journalism like we have seen Tracey is capable of.

  11. This is a case of Nine biting the hand that feeds it, as it’ll badly damage ratings of their Gordon Ramsay TV shows they air, which before this were experiencing Aus rating declines anyway.

  12. I must say, as someone who has had trouble watching or respecting Tracy G for many years, I did watch last night and was impressed by what she had to say. Much respect.

And as for Ramsay, what a complete a**hole.

  13. Tracy was amazing. I have a newfound respect for her. Gordon is a tool. I wont be bothering with his restaurant when it opens in Melbourne

  14. The trouble with this show and TGs role is that it is normally the purveyor of total crap journalism and TV and as soon as a bit of stick is thrown the other way, we get a moralising editorial.

  15. Haha this is massively ironic. Channel Nine and ACA have received so much leverage so far out of Gordon’s brashness and the way the ‘controversial’ chef tears strips off people in his TV shows, but suddenly when it’s you on the receiving end – ohh nooo he’s an arrogant narcissist.

But at the same time, Tracy did this reply well and with some style. Good on her.
