Radio stunt backfires for Kyle & Jackie O

A radio stunt conducted by former Big Brother hosts went very, very wrong when a 14yo girl admitted she had been raped.

kyle jackieFormer Big Brother hosts -and Australian Idol judge- Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, are under fire today for a comedy stunt that misfired on their radio show on 2DAY FM.

The stunt saw a 14yo girl answering “lie detector” style questions from put to her by her mother, live on radio.

“Have you ever had sex?” the mother asked.

The 14-year-old replied: “I’ve already told you the story about this … and don’t look at me and smile because it’s not funny.”

Amid on-air pauses the girl blurted out, “Oh OK … I got raped when I was 12 years old.”

Amid stunned silence, Kyle Sandilands then replied, “Right … is that the only experience you’ve had?”

With the moment clearly in disarray, it took Jackie O to apologise and abort the stunt, offering access to counselling for the girl.

Jenny Parkes, 2DayFM general manager issued a statement saying: “All due care and consideration was given to the family and clearly we didn’t know anything about the incident.

“The moment we became aware of it was live on air and we shut it down as soon as we possibly could.

“As is only appropriate, we are offering all the assistance we can to the family, including counselling, in what is of course an extraordinarily difficult situation.”

According to Sydney Morning Herald, the girl had told Sandilands, “I’m scared … it’s not fair,” before the questions started.

You can hear some of the sequence here.

Sandilands, who regularly co-hosts his show from a base in LA, is due to return as a judge on Australian Idol next month.

  1. I’ve just listened to this (via the link), I would never normally listen to Kyle and Jackie 0, and now I know why! This is so disturbing, for so many reasons. What on earth was the mother of that girl thinking ??? Was being on the radio really worth humiliating her daughter. I can’t believe she asked that question knowing that her daughter had been raped, let alone sat there smiling at her.
Surely a bit more research by the station could have exposed the problems between this mother and daughter, and stopped it from ever going to air.
Give me Hamish and Andy any day, at least they don’t find humour in humiliation of others.

  2. i find it annoying that people blame kyle and jackio for this, they did this lie detector thing many times before and it provided entertainment but the mother when into this knowing about what happened to her daughter but she still asked the question, tbh the mother is at fault not kyle and jackio

  3. In defense of the program and what has been offered up they had no idea she was raped this is a regular segment on the show I believe the ‘lie-detector’ having a mother & daughter in there wasn’t supposed to end like that. Kyle’s comments weren’t exactly appropriate but I don’t think they were overly harsh or uncompassionate.

Future segments like this though should be pre-recorded.

  4. @gavin: no offence taken. But, please don’t take this comment offensively, Kyle is a tv personality aswell as on radio, so I would actually say that it is relevant.

  5. What Kyle said may have been stupid, but given they both knew nothing about the situation to start with is the problem here. The mother knew of her daughters situation and she asked the questions, not Kyle and Jac. I think the mother has some explaining to do and may need some parenting councelling.
Kyle probably didnt react with the right words, luckily Jackie defused the situation straight away.

  6. What do you expect from those 2 loser fame whores? not the first time they have stuffed up, in the immortal words of BB, its Time to go, Kyle & Jackie O, (hehe that rhymes)

  7. Ahhh, when stunts go bad. Time to go Kyle. The easiest way to deal with Kyle is to turn the dial. The ratings for his radio freak show are the only thing he cares about. What chance a new host for Australian Idol. Unfortunately the damage has been done and I don’t think 10 will get the same warm and fuzzies from Idol that they got from MChef.

  8. Lie Detector stunts are ridiculous embarrassing nonsense, and shouldn’t be allowed to happen at all. For that reason alone they should be reprimanded.

But the specific incident seems to have been due to the Mother, in which case you can’t lay true blame on the hosts, even if they are irritating wastes of space.

  9. 2day FM really need to do something with Kyle, or be seen to anyway, his initial response of
“Right … is that the only experience you’ve had?”

Was just disgusting….even for Vile Sandilands…

while i think commercial breakfast FM radio is for peole with room temperature IQ”s, It seems that Jackie O has handled the situation reasonably well and taken control..shame on the girls mother though…i hope the matter is referred on to the relevant authorities.

  10. This is kinda like that ch9 show that failed not too long ago.

IMO the mother is just as much to blame as the radio show/station. I just hope the police can investigate the possible rape case and the girl gets any help she needs.

  11. Apart from the stupid hosts, the real offender in this case is the mother. She should have her child removed and put into protective care as this mother is obviously incapable of caring for her child. Also, it should be illegal to put children on air and put them in such a position. It is child abuse and not only should the broadcasting authorities investigate, the police should as well.

  12. Commercial radio is a disgrace and everyone associated with it should be ashamed. There are too many stories like this one of “stunts” going wrong. Repeat after me, you are not funny …

  13. he should just go start finding some more talentless hacks with his wife and try and make them into superstars. he wont get sacked from either job

  14. Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, it is time they go off the air! This is very bad, how dare they ask a young on how many times she had sex. Australia Idol should think again for having Kyle Sandilands as a judge. When there is alot young kids watching the show and for him to act and talk like this, it is crap. Kids these days are being bullied and abused also have low self esteem, they don’t this extra bulls**t on the radio. And it is not the first time that Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O have acted on the air unappropriated.

  15. I can’t believe the mother dragged her daughter on the air to ask about sex – knowing she had been raped and smiled about it when she was there. That’s beyond disgusting.

  16. Heard this story earlier on today, but it didn’t mention the fact that the Mother (of all people) asked the questions! That’s just shocking especially seeing as what she knew!! I feel so sorry for this poor girl, not only because of what happened to her when she was 12, but because her mother seems to have taken that as a joke!

  17. No offence, but this is a TV discussion log. Who cares less about the
goings on in the radio business and 2 figures who don’t currently work on TV.
