This is a top-notch series featuring Judi Dench in an adaptation of three classic Elizabeth Gaskell novels.

Cranford in the 1840s is a small Cheshire market town on the cusp of change. The railway is pushing its way relentlessly towards the town from the northern industrial city of Manchester, bringing fears of migrant workers and the breakdown of law and order.

The cast includes Michael Gambon, Eileen Atkins, Philip Glenister, Imelda Staunton and Julia Sawalha.

It will be followed at 8:30pm by Hornblower.

Hornblower is set in England, 1793, and beneath the rolling clouds of a January gale, a shoreboat cuts through the churning waters of Spithead Harbour to where the battleship Justinian rides at anchor. Huddled wet and shivering in the sternsheets of the shoreboat, a pale thin fifteen-year-old boy named Horatio Hornblower is about to embark upon the greatest adventure of his life.

They screen from August 23.

  1. Hornblower is addictively good…such a classic. Looking forward to Cranford, too, as idol is pretty dismal thus far. Bye bye Dicko, hello Dame Judi for Sundays!

  2. I dont usually like period drama but this one has supurb acting by Judy Dench and Eileen Atkins who are also very funny. Its a Womans drama really but I loved every ep and so pleased that a xmas special is being made this year. Its far superior to that other clone “Lark Rise to Candelford”
