Clock ticking on 24

After 2010 where will 24 turn? FOX says: “We haven’t made any decision whether it’s back or not.”

jack-bauer-watchWhile there has been talk of a feature film version of 24 for a while, time is probably running out on the small screen version. And in many respects, maybe Jack Bauer should bow out gracefully.

“We haven’t made any decision whether it’s back or not,” FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly admits. “The producers are passionate, Kiefer is passionate and we don’t have any of them looking to jump ship. It’s a show we’re really proud of. It’s going to come down to a business decision.

“It’s not an inexpensive show on the network books and we also want to finish strong. This is not a show we want to prop up. It will be a whole creative and business discussion and something we’ll have to deal with over the next few months.”

Sutherland recently answered questions on the future of a film idea by saying everybody wanted to focus on the series.

Still, a feature could be a good way to cap things off -as long as it gets a real budget and isn’t just a crummy filler like 24: Redemption was.

The eighth season, set in New York City,  airs in the US in January.

  1. I love this show… So there is no way I want to see it go – but I thinnk with a change like New York – who knows, maybe they can bring some new life into the series – hopefulyl they pull this off well and we see it go till season 10 – or beyond.

  2. If Keifer wants to avoid being typecast, 8 seasons is definitely enough for this show, which should go into movies to fill the void left by Die Hard, as the
DH4 movie was terrible. 24 uses a lot of cinematic ideas, for which they don’t have the budget to adapt properly, plus with Keifer currently being the highest paid actor in US TV, Fox wouldn’t be able to afford his asking price for a 9th or 10th final season.

  3. @David @ Green Point: I was annoyed at its late time slot, but I ended up just taping it each week. Although, seeing as the dvd came out so quickly after the season finished, I should have just waited.

  4. I like the show but seem to loose interest about 3-4 eps into the seasons, oh well there is always PayTV or the DVD…

A feature film might be more compelling with none of the ad breaks.

  5. The Johnny Depp movie “Nick of Time” was just on free to air TV again. It is “24 the movie” years before 24. Political assassination, hero with a child in danger, and events occur in real time.

  6. I still enjoy this series. Season 7 picked up the ball and ran with it, but it’s obviously become a show that no longer appeals to the majority – as evidenced by 7’s rescheduling it to 11pm Sunday night. No idea how many people time shifted each ep – we certainly did. Just hope 7 screens the next series for us fans and not drop it toally.

  7. RichoTB: Could not disagree with you more. Lost has had direction since the begining, the writers knew where they wanted to take the series, how they wanted to shape it, and particularly in the last 2 seasons, have done an excellent job!
A show that does lack direction and quality writing is Heroes. Each season loosely ties in with the one before. Syler is one of the worst “bad guys” ever written (not the actor, he’s ok, but the part is shocking, can the writers make up their mind?). To me, Heroes is more like a midday soap than anything.

PB did have a lull in quality half way through season 2 and seas.3 but season 4 brought them right out of that pit and put it back in the category of Outstanding.

As for Seas.7 of 24. Liked it, didn’t love it though. A bit repetitive and predictable at times-however seeing as it’s up to 7 its doing a pretty good job.

Seasons 1 and 5 are my fav.

  8. i lived season 7 quite a lot – except IMO the ending was much worst than season 6. There were 4 minutes “left on the clock” and not many of the plot points had been resolved. I guess it comes under the cliffhanger category – but there wasn’t really a whole lot of closure on any/many of the plots. Very weak finish.

I think the franchise should go into a well financed movie series. If they dropped the clock counter and made non-realtim movies about jack bauer – that’d be a winner. It’d be a cool notion to do a “beginnings” storyline in the movies with a pre-ctu jack bauer – doing military missions etc. Just a suggestion 🙂

7 seasons in, I’m actually sorry for the guy – how much sh!t can one guy go through?

  9. 24: Redemption wasn’t a crummy feature where we watching the same movie they were shooting on location in Africa and the movie was awesome. Im hoping season 8 isn’t the last season I think they show could still keep going. Maybe the 9th season should be its last.

  10. Season 7 was one of the worst season I’ve watched, didn’t enjoy it at all. NYC will provide a good backdrop for Season 8 I will definately tune back in, though I still have 3 outstanding episodes to watch from Season 7 I am really bored with it.

Good thing with 24 though is that even if there is a poor season it can start again next season.

  11. Massive 24 fan, but I definately don’t want 24 to end up like the simpsons (in its 20th season it’s never been more apparent that the writers just don’t care anymore).
The concept of 24 is unique but has already been streched enough. The only way the show can survive is by having a spin off, which could be succesful, otherwise I would like to see the show end after 8 (not against the idea of a good movie though)

  12. Yes, it pretty much is the same thing every season but its still one of the more entertaining shows on TV. Season 7 was one of the best seasons yet, and proves there’s still life in the series. And unlike other serial shows like Lost and Prison Break, the quality never really took a dip. (Some would argue that season 6 was horrid, I found it dragged in some parts but was never as bad as say, PB season 3 set in a Mexican prison or Lost season 5 set in the 1970s, among other decades.)
