Prolific character actor Gregory Itzin, best known for 24, has died.

Prolific character actor Gregory Itzin, best known for 24, has died, aged 74.

He died on Friday due to complications during emergency surgery.

24 director and producer Jon Cassar, tweeted, “He was one of the most talented actors I had the honor to work with, but more than that he was an all around great guy. He’ll be missed by his ’24’ family who had nothing but love & respect for him. You made your mark, now Rest In Peace friend.”

He played the treacherous President Charles Logan on 24 across 2005 – 2010, earning Emmy nominations, one for supporting actor in a drama and another for guest actor in a drama.

“[It was] a sea change,” he once said of the role. “I was a working actor and that sort of thing, but now I’m an in resident villain.”

Itzin also appeared in Flying High, Lincoln, The Ides of March and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

He had a recurring part on Friends as father-in-law to Phoebe. He also appeared on Lou Grant, The A-Team, 21 Jump Street, Knots Landing, Murder One, Murphy Brown, MacGyver, NCIS, Hawaii Five-0, The Resident, plus Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
