David Reyne quits 9AM

After 4 years, David Reyne will exit 9AM at the end of the year, leaving TEN to review the show's future prospects.

9amDavid Reyne, co-host of 9AM with David and Kim, has announced he is quitting the show at the end of the year.

“After 4 years of hosting 9AM I have decided to hand in my notice to Network TEN,” he said in a statement. “Over almost 1,800 hours of the program I’ve run with the whole gamut of topics from global warming, the GFC, celebrity gossip to choosing the right vase for your Mother’s Day flowers and reading tea leaves. It’s been truly exhilarating, occasionally excruciating and utterly exhausting.

“I know it’s customary at a time like this for the exiting host to say something gratuitous about their employer – but I truly mean it when I say that it’s been a great delight for me to have worked with the magnificent team of people at Network TEN. I’m very grateful for their support over the past 4 years.”

Reyne did not indicate any immediate prospects that may have swayed his decision.

“For the time being I’m just looking forward to a long lie down over summer while thinking about what 2010 may hold in store for me.”

TEN programmer David Mott indicated he was reviewing all elements of 9AM in coming months. Recently he told TV Tonight the show didn’t enjoy a good lead-in with TEN’s children’s shows competing against Sunrise and Today at 9AM‘s expense.

Yesterday the show rated 56,000 viewers nationally against The Morning Show‘s 210,000 and Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s 139,000.

9AM was a brand new venture back in 2006 and David’s good humour and skill have been fundamental in establishing the loyal audience base we enjoy now,” Mott said today.

“We have appreciated and enjoyed working with David over the last 4 years.

“We will miss him and wish him well.”

  1. @JG: Don’t forget this show (along with the morning show and mournings with kerry-anne kennerly) is basically 2 hours of ads. Not only do they have regular commercial breaks, but they also have in-show infomercials. Which is why I don’t know why anyone would actually bother watching any of those shows.

  2. will miss david, he is a funny guy. 9am is very different to the other morning shows. they have much better, longer, more community based interviews that help everyone. unlike 7 and 7 who just play all the crap they think will pull viewers in, like celebs, and talkin about worthless crap. 9am is for people who actually have a brain and want to learn!!

  3. The infomercials built into the show pay for it, not the actual ratings.

I think it is too much to have 3 of essentially the same sort of show on at the same time in the mornings and this would be 10’s opportunity to go out and do something different from 9-11am.

Maybe play some of their sitcoms like Friends, Everybody loves Raymond, Will and Grace, etc. Maybe Simpsons during school holidays.

  4. 56,000 viewers??? for 2 hours of live television – isn’t that less than the SBS test pattern??

Where the hell are the auditors – Ten can’t be making any money on a show that gets such a paltry viewing audience..but you have to give it to Ten…they’re persistent if nothing else.

I watched it occasionally and it was just sooooooo boring – the brown pooy set with the fake rainforest look in the background was just shocking and Reyne always looked like he’d be rather washing his hair than hosting this rubbish. At least Kerrie Ann on Nine tries to put a bit of ooomp in her mid morning boring stories.

Bring back repeats of Lost in Space…or Mary Tyler Moore – that’s what people would like a dose of mid morning!

I also think Kim should return to newsreading – maybe late news!!!

  5. I really never watch any of these shows, but 9AM was far FAR better than the others… Kim is a great talent, David was OK, but together they seemed to work quite well, if a bit clumsily at times.

I hope they redeploy Kim into a far more worthy role, and for heavens sake, do something entirely different in the morning timeslot.

  6. Kim can easily host the show herself and doesn’t need a co-host. The show’s national ratings are abysmal, but the moronic advertorials make Ten a lot of money, compared to them showing repeats of something for 2 hours, so that’s why it won’t get axed.

  7. 9AM with David & Kim is far better show than figures suggest.
But there again, I don’t count as I am not one of the select few with “people meter”
In contrast to the shows on 9 & 7, David & Kim actually let the guests talk.

  8. It’s a shame, it’s the only show I feel that I get to use my brain to watch. Much better than the patronising and dim alternatives

I guess dumbing down the nation will always work better on Aussie TV

  9. Thank God!! whoever thought he would be a good choice for morning TV needs their head read, hes moody, cranky, has zero warmth…that he lasted 4 years amazes me….i hope they keep Kim though, shes lovely!
