Nine's new-look News set in Melbourne turns a contemporary corner with a colourful, versatile set with plasma screens and an overdue live city view.

94Nine’s new-look News set in Melbourne turned a contemporary corner with a colourful, versatile set with multiple plasma screens that finally adds a live backdrop of Melbourne behind presenter Peter Hitchener.

With multiple cameras the bulletin also allows Hitchener to talk to correspondents on location in a single shot and utilised new wide shots.

While Tony Jones was seated to Hitchener’s left, Livinia Nixon is on holiday with Today’s Steve Jacobs stepping in to present weather.

  1. Why do I want to watch tv to watch a newsreader watching tv?

Love the last screen capture which shows three (!) signs on screen telling us we are watching Nine news.

Maybe in the breaks they can use the screens to look up the latest video “YouTube sensation that’s taking the world by storm” for their next news segment! 😉

  2. witty banter between sandy roberts and Peter Mitchell is still No.1 on the witty banter ladder. not awkward like Sandra Sully and that dude, painful to watch.

  3. In our house, the big question was: Did they make the weather presenter take up a smaller portion of the screen to allow for Livinia’s growing baby bump?? 😛

  4. that set is far too busy for my liking.. at one stage there was the huge backdrop of titles/visuals behind Peter whilst he was reading then after that news story Peter was back to the familiar city backdrop as per the old set… i’d thought they had a sudden change of plans and returned the old set just after one story !!.. oh and another thing… the banter (and more particularly the laughter) between Tony Jones and Peter Hitchener is so false… please Hitch just throw to the ad break without the inappropriate giggles !!

  5. Why does it still look tacky? I think I’ve developed such a hateful bias towards Nine that anything they do to make themselves better never looks good. But yeh, better than the Adelaide Set which seriously looks like its being filmed in someones back shed with a big Adelaide skyline poster pinned on the wall

  6. The new set is awesome! Well done 9. It made me make the switch from 7 and will stay with 9. Enjoyed the multi angles. Thought they could have found a better fitting suit for Steve Jacobs though.

  7. It certainly looks better than the old one and Hitchener look good in a new suit, but any News Service with Steve Jacobs on it deserves to be boycotted. Is there a more annoying person on TV?

  8. Loved the look. even the style of news presentation was miles better. One gripe though. The watermark covered various bits of information during the programme. One fine example was during the weather broadcast. Right over the current temp! Very annoying!

Why do we need to have such bloody big watermarks anyway? I know I’m watching Nine!

  9. That’s a cool set. Now, it should be Brisbane’s turn to get a new set. With Melissa Downes and Andrew Lofthouse being a recent change in the presentation of Nine News Brisbane, it is highly likely that this is a major reason why Queenslanders have switched to Seven News Brisbane and the fact that Nine News Brisbane ratings have been declining since this change.

A new set would certainly make it more appealing.

  10. why choose pretty much the same angle of the city as seven has had for years. view from south east even would have provided a difference.
other than that it is pretty cool

  11. i think the big screen is a great idea…but it now just looks like 7’s (well closer to it) you would think that they would change it something slightly different
when did 7 add there live backdrop?
