Idol reviewing Kyle Sandilands

Updated: 2DAY FM suspends Kyle & Jackie O show for review while TEN reconsiders his role as an Idol judge.

ksFollowing an outrageous and misfired radio stunt last week, TEN is said to be reconsidering Kyle Sandilands’ role with Australian Idol.

“There’s no answer on his future yet … Meetings have been taking place and will continue to do so early next week,” a network spokesperson told news.com.au

“But we’re taking this really seriously.”

The networks is said to be under pressure from Idol‘s rights holder in the UK, 19 Entertainment, which is concerned about preserving the show’s family appeal.

This week the Idol judges embark on early publicity events with media around the country. If Sandilands is to be extricated from the show, FremantleMedia will need to clarify his role swiftly.

Sandilands, who has apologised for the stunt, has already filmed the audition tour for the show, but could be replaced before the live Sunday shows get underway. Delta Goodrem is also a guest judge on the audition tour.

The Sunday Telegraph reports a public announcement is expected to be made on Tuesday.

UPDATED Sun 7:30pm: Kyle Sandilands’ management has advised Austereo that he is unable to perform his duties on-air at this time.

Austereo is to suspend the Kyle & Jackie O Show until it has completed a network review, which commenced last Wednesday.

The Australian also speculates Sandilands is on the list for Celebrity MasterChef.

  1. Maybe this will be the humble pie he needs to eat. I ofcourse don’t think he was fully responsible for what happened on air last week.. the majority of blame lies squarely on the mother. However, there should have been a delay, particularly with sensitive issues. Even more, why are they talking about sex and drugs with 14 years children! That segment should never have been invented.

  2. Andrew,

I don’t think everybody blames Kyle for the “stunt”. I, for one, don’t think he was responsible but I still want him dumped from Idol.

You won’t watch without him, I won’t watch with him. Channel 10 has to figure out if there are more people who hate Kyle or more people who love Kyle… over the last week I’d say a fair number of viewers will have jumped in the former column.

  3. Just heard the radio show has been taken off air “indefinatetly” (which I guess means until radio ratings drop and the whole thing blows over and 2dayFM can appear to be being proactive) . Now TEN can jump on the band wagon and get rid of it. Poison him & his little side kick are for television.

  4. @Andrew., I don’t think people are so turned off by his response (which wasn’t the best) but simply the fact that they had a 14 year old girl on talking about her sex life. Who asked the questions is irrelevant, a 14 year old girl’s sex life is not entertainment and shouldn’t have been on the show in the first place.

  5. TEN knew what they were getting when they hired Kyle. His sole role on Idol is to humiliate delusional people.

They are just as guilty of profiting from people’s misery as Austereo.

  6. you’re all f**ing mental
    1. kyle never asked the girl the question, the mother did
similar segments have taken place so many times on the radio show
all you f***ing cows should get over it,
the girls family is trying to
and youre turning it into a massive piece of s**t
maybe if you werent all so worried about owmuch you hate kyle, and saw the black and white of it, youd realise that kyle is not in the wrong..
kyle adds so much value to the show, it’d go up the s**t without him
i would not watch it, and i know other people that wouldnt.

  7. Kyle just came on board as a replacement of sorts for Dicko anyway. Dicko has been back for a little while now, so Kyle can go and they can bring back Mark.

  8. Kyle Sandilands is concerned with his own celebrity and how much it can make for him. Yes I agree with other comments that the girl’s mother is responsible. However, what sort of radio DJ would want to be asking a 14 year old girl about their sex life. It is abuse!

Kyle should be sacked from Idol as its on its last legs anyway and the last thing it needs is a total tosser like Kyle making people turn off.

He adds no value to the show!

  9. Eh… doesn’t bother me. I don’t doubt he panicked and made that remark without intending too. That said his talent only extends as far as being a professional a**hole. After he went on Idol and got his TV makeover I decided I hated him.

Back in the day when he had long greasy hair, looked like he’d smell bad, dressed like a bum and was just a smartass on radio he was enjoyable. Nowadays he looks like the token slightly fat boy band member. Does he have an ear for music? No, just look at his wife… Admittedly he does at least have a greater sense of what is commercially viable than the other antiquated out of touch judges.

All in all there’s not real point discussing whether or not he should stay on the show because it will make no difference. Ratings will continue to slip regardless. A mediocre unlikeable “artist” will emerge victorious and release an album that at best will have moderate success and then they’ll slip into obscurity again like all other winners. What ever happened to Shannon Noll? Casey? That Italian chick… ummm her name was… Anywho!

  10. Bass,

I think what he does on 2DayFM affects how the public perceives him. People don’t just switch their opinions of him off when Australian Idol pops up on the screen.

To be fair I’d rather see him sacked and pick up a multi-million dollar settlement than have to see him on television ever again.

  11. I absolutely detest Kyle Sandilands, and although I don’t agree with him for being taken off Australian Idol for something he did on radio, I still believe he should be taken off for being an idiot and having no musical ability to mentor and fairly judge contestants.

  12. I’ve had a great deal of thought about this and while I believe that ultimately the mother is responsible for putting her daughter into a terrible situation and should really be held to account, the producers, along with Kyle and Jackie O should stand up and take some responsiblity for the incident as well.

Kyle being singled out is unfair – I have no doubt his comments were just blurted out because he could think of nothing else to say – but before the interview began, *someone* should have realised that it was a bad idea. Putting a 14 year old on a lie detector is asking for trouble. When the mother mentioned sex, Kyle or Jackie O should have stopped it there and then.

I won’t be sorry to see Kyle go from Idol.

  13. If Ch10 are all about happy feel good inspirational television these days then Kyle has no place on their network. That being said, this “news” from Ch10’s publicity department is clearly a weak pull for press in the lead up to Idol. Transparent like cellophane. please try harder next time.

  14. Channel Ten should hit this moron where it really hurts – his pocket – and dump him!!!! Someone needs to stand up to this ridiculous bully and show him (not tell him) that what he did and was responsible for was completely unacceptable and amoral, as Austereo seem unable to!

  15. I don’t know whether Kyle truly thinks he knows anything about music or whether he is just pretending to, but the fact is he’s no more an expert on it than anyone. He won’t be missed if he gets the boot. Then again, the replacement judge probably won’t be any more of an expert than Kyle was – tool or no tool.

  16. The lie detector wasn’t a stunt, I have heard that segment on their show for 3 years… and this is the first time the lie detector has backfired.

    Not a bad record..
