Sea Patrol loses 3 cast members

The tour of duty will end for Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Saskia Burmeister and Jay Ryan.

spWhen it returns for its fourth series, Sea Patrol will be without three key cast members: Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Buffer), Saskia Burmeister (Nav) and Jay Ryan (Spider).

Producers Hal and Di McElroy from McElroy All Media confirmed the changes to fansite sea-patrol.com this week.

“Actors doing TV series are usually contracted for 3 series,” said the McElroys. “So departures are always on the cards. Of course in Navy, postings are rarely longer than two years, so there are always regular crew turnover anyway. But of course we’ll miss them. All three are fine actors and we’ve become good friends.”

Producers confirmed the return of Lisa McCune, Ian Stenlake, Matthew Holmes, Kristian Schmid, John Batchelor and Nikolai Nikolaeff.

“All the cast made their decision about staying or leaving at the end of last year. So they’ve accepted and respected each others’ decisions and moved on and we went on to shoot Series 3 as written, and we were very happy with the result.”

Producers also promise new characters for the fourth series, which will extend to sixteen episodes.

  1. I was very sorry to see the three characters Buffer, Nav and Spider go from Sea Patrol. Their characters really added to the series.

I was especially sorry to see Jeremy Lindsay Taylor leave. His acting brought some real power to the show. Hope he goes forward into something well deserving of his acting.

  2. why did nav, buffer and spider have to go?!!!

they were the reason i loved the show so much! it isnt

  4. I really, really , really liked spider ( jay ryan). He was so good and he had a good bond with bomber (kirsty lee-allen). I don’t think that the show will be the same withiut him. I’ve already seen season 4 advertise and i gotta say that is good, But, i reckon it would be even better with Spider in it. So sad. tears

I will always respect their decision, but come on…wow, the best ones leave!

I will miss Nav, Buffer and Spider so much…. I will give the new cast a chance, but they will have a hard time growing on me.

Best of luck to Saskia, Jeremy and Jay!!! You were responsible for getting me hooked on this show!!! Good luck in whatever you guys will do and hopefully we can all look forward in seeing more work from you guys soon!

  7. I was nearly heart broken when ET died but now i am evan sader knowing that 3 of sea partols best people are leaving. (Tears) My sister dosent evan want to watch the show any more because she absloutly loves Buffer like i do with ET and Spider. So now i will se how good sea patrol is after all of this and see if i will watch it again or not.

  8. It was bad enough losing ET but to lose nav buffer and spider, the best of the bunch makes me wonder if i will continue watching. perhaps they should have got rid of two dads who will never be a replacement for ET

  9. hi my name stephen and i love watching sea patrol and i want it to be back again because it has all my favourite cast and i really hope it come back on channel 9 soon because i really want to watch it again btw the sea patrol is so funny and i enjoyed watching it so please please put it back on

Sea patrol will never be as good as it was with these 3 sailors!!! but it still is grea

  11. i would say to thoes three people to send my apologies and well done to them and there hard efforts from 2007 to 2009 im pleased with them and we will missed them so much and good luck we will remain you three back on air on season 5 or season 6

enjoy your break and take care of your selfs thanks

  12. Wow! I was shocked when I read this!
I love watching Sea Patrol, and I agree that the last two episodes of season 3 weren’t so good, but after hearing that Buffer, Spider and Nav aren’t returning, I don’t think I’ll be watching season 4!
Buffer and Spider are the two most gorgeous characters, and they play such key roles in the program that i don’t think that they’ll be easily replaced.
I might continue watching season 4 but what’s next? a new CO? a new ship?
i will miss buffer and spider 🙁
and i agree with Jack!: Better come up with some very hot replacements!

  13. Sea Patrol is an excellent show. With all the reality shows on air, it is fabulous to see some real actors getting some work. Nav, Buffer and Spider are great actors and I wish them well in the future.

It was a pity that they showed the double episodes in the end of the series as it appeared that the network was selling out on the series. I am glad to see that they are bringing back another series.

    Bring on the next series!

  14. Sea Patrol’s a great fun show – it’s a simple family show and I think it should be commended for that.

Shame about the cast changes but new characters next season should be good.

Of course Nine is going to renew it if it gets 1.3 – nothing else on is rating at the moment.

They need a good lead in for the show though – it has potential but needs more exposure. It would rate a hell of a lot higher if it were on Seven.

  15. why did 9 renew this? the ratings it gets far from justify the budget. anything at $1.3mil per episode should not fall below 1.7mil. and then they burned off the last few eps for no apparent reason. i thought that would have been the end.

9 could solve so many problems if they put that money to better use.

    disclaimer: i don’t watch it.

    1. No, the FFC invested in Series 1 and 2, as MiniSeries funding. Then when the Tax Offset was introduced Sea Patrol got a tax rebate on Series 2 which it used to repay the FFC. It got a Tax Rebate on Series 3 and likely Series 4.

  16. Its a shame, but it happens in most shows.
Spooks still goes on even though it changes its main characters quite often, it has not detracted from that show.
Hope Sea Patrol still works with new characters.

  17. “Of course in Navy, postings are rarely longer than two years” nice way to put it.

I thought this season was a little less focused, the main story was lots in the background until the last 2 eps.

With lower ratings and a high budget, how much longer can it last?

  18. They should have let the thing end… The show started off pretty cheesy originally, but gradually improved. It was never champagne drama, but it was an ok way to kill an hour. Then, in the final few episodes of season 3, it went from watchable to utterly appalling. Seriously, did anyone watch the final two episodes without thinking the last project the writers worked on was The Three Stooges?

It must be embarrassing for any real navy personnel to watch this trainwreck in motion.

  19. I do hope Jeremy gets into something decent now.
He was in his element in Something In The Air,a fine show that a commercial station should have picked up.Sadly 9 especially over the last 10 years just keeps rolling out the same old drivel (with a different name).
At least 7 gives us something a little more quirkier (Rafters) & Always Greener.Still haven’t forgiven you for cancelling that in favour of Our Restaurant Rules,i think it was?
10 on the other hand have a habit of cancelling a show just when it’s at its peak…Secret Life anyone? It wasn’t any better than when it finished…what a great cast.At least Rush has got past that difficult first year…this is a good show.Wouldn’t mind seeing Jeremy in a cops uniform in this one…and a little more skin.
10 & 7 time to let go of the stal(warts) H&A,Neighbours.Imagine the great shows you could produce with the money saved.A new prison show as rumored several years ago…..i would call it “Hold”.
    Call me.
