BrucemcaSeven Sports presenter Bruce McAvaney lost his 84 year old father Roy McAvaney yesterday, a man who inspired him all his life.

Roy passed away peacefully at his Adelaide nursing home yesterday morning.

Speaking from Adelaide, Bruce paid tribute to his father saying: “Dad was born in South Australia on Anzac Day, 1925. He valued a good education and after his return from World War II service he trained as an accountant. He enjoyed a long and successful career in public service.

“Dad was a facts and figures man and he and Mum passionately loved their sport.

“As a son, I am blessed to be able to say I have spoken with both my parents everyday of their lives.

“His sense of right and wrong and a ‘fair go’ for everyone are values I will cherish forever. I’m so proud to be able to call him Dad.”

Channel Seven friends and colleagues extend their most sincere condolences to Bruce and Annie and the McAvaney family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.

  1. We both felt instant concern for Bruce when Dennis made his comments before the prelim. I googled Bruce to see if there was any news but none showed up at the time. Very sad to hear of his loss, he was obviously very close to his Dad. All our best wishes to him and his family.

  2. my wife and I kept on asking wheres bruce last week not comentating our great game. living in queensland we dont here much, but whilst watching the brownlow still no sign of bruce, finally i found out why. condolences to bruce and family.

  3. Bruce, your tribute to your Dad was beautiful. That you spoke to your parents daily is testament to the great love you had for each other. Such indelible bonds are very special gifts. Your Dad is so very proud of you, Bruce – you have been a fantastic son.
Take care, Bruce. Condolences to you and your family.

  4. Heard on another forum that 3AW reported late this afternoon Bruce won’t be hosting tomorrow night’s Brownlow coverage now. Sandy Roberts is said to be stepping in.

  5. According to the Herald Sun, Seven announced today that Bruce would stay in Adelaide to prepare for his father’s funeral on Tuesday. Sandy Roberts will host the Brownlow Medal count on Monday.

  6. Sincere condolences to Bruce. I really missed him calling the mighty Saints last night. I’m glad he’s had such a wonderful relationship with his parents who must be very proud of their son.

  7. I ignorantly didn’t realise Bruce wasn’t on last night, as I only listened to the last quarter. Now that I think about it, all I remember hearing was Dennis, so I guess there was no replacement.

  8. I had the AFL delayed coverage on in the background last night and missed the start. I wondered at the time why Bruce’s voice was no where to be heard. Condolences to you Bruce and your entire family.

  9. I felt something was not right when Bruce did not turn up at the MCG to call the AFL preliminary final between St Kilda and Western Bulldogs, even though it was Seven’s last televised game for 2009. Then just before the national anthem, Dennis Cometti said there was a death in Bruce’s family. After reading the article I know why. Condolences to Bruce, Annie and the McAvaney family. (I hope Bruce will still host the Brownlow Medal count on Monday)
