Hey Hey it’s a marathon

Updated: Hey Hey's reunion will run for 2.5 hrs on September 29th -including Molly but without Ossie Ostrich.

mollyheyhey2The Hey Hey it’s Saturday reunion will run for a huge 2.5 hrs on Tuesday September 29th, as Nine tries to maximise viewer curiosity in the show.

The effect of that is likely to bring down its overall average figure, but if it hold viewers, could win the night for Nine. Expect reports the next day to lean towards the show’s peak rather than its average audience. Generally speaking, the longer a show goes, the lower its average.

The reunion will compete with shows including Packed to the Rafters and new episodes of NCIS and East West 101.

There was also a report on the weekend that suggested whilst Molly Meldrum had been given the all clear to appear by Seven, now Foxtel was exercising its contractual rights and preventing him from appearing.

Meldrum is signed to both networks.

Updated: Today’s Press Release indicates Molly is in, along with John Blackman, Wilbur Wilde, Red Symons, Livinia Nixon, Russell Gilbert, Plucka Duck. No mention of Ossie Ostrich.

  1. This show is going to tank i recon. It will be up against PTTR and NCIS and i really dont think it is going to put an indent in either lineup. I am predicting 850,000 over the 2.5 hours. It will peak at maybe 1.1m viewers. I think its going to fail big time. Nine it belongs on Saturday not Tuesday. You are going to crash and burn with this one.

  2. They should get Jackie MacDonald on too!

I thought the reason they took it off was because it cost too much (even though it rated well). So if they bring it back after this special are they saying they now have found a miraculous way to make it cheaper?!

  3. We mustn’t forget how long it was on air for their (then) final show. I would imagine 9 is throwing as much of the budget they can into these 2 reunion shows. Let’s also not forget that Hey Hey has always been a product fueled by spontaneity and the unexpected, most often pushing segments over time. I don’t see the 2.5 hour call as a stretch at all.

  4. David, can you please confirm Molly is in despite earlier reports Foxtel was chaining him up with his contract with them?

Also, I’d expect Hey Hey to go closer to 3 hours (unintentionally).

  5. 1st hour should do OK, but second will struggle against the competition, dragging down the average audience for the show. 2.5 hours though is too long. Maybe they hope that people will come back at 9.40 after Rafters or NCIS?

  6. i don’t think it will rate to the blockbuster results that some people are expecting. over the 2.5 hours maybe 1.3max. maybe 1.6 for the first hour.

not sure if this has been brought up yet. but why are there two reunion specials? what good is the 2nd one.

  7. Why would Hey Hey want to compete with PTTR. If they are trying to test out the viewer response to this show, isn’t this the worst timeslot of the week to try it out?
