2.1m as Hey Hey thumps MasterChef

Hey Hey the Reunion soared to a huge 2.16m viewers last night thrashing Celebrity MasterChef's 1.35m.

hhmHey Hey the Reunion soared to a huge 2.16m viewers for its two and a half hours last night, thrashing Celebrity MasterChef‘s 1.35m viewers.

The nostalgic show gave Nine a whopping 40.0% share, almost double Seven’s 21.8% and TEN’s 20.8% share.

Preliminary figures, which are not yet adjusted for its extra 30 minute overrun, showed The Apprentice Australia, originally slated for 10pm, showed another 953,000 watching Nine from 10 – 11pm. Half of that was for Hey Hey‘s extra 30 minutes.

Nine’s reunion show blew the opposition out of the water. Other shows to feel the pinch were NCIS: Los Angeles (943,000), World’s Strictest Parents (912,000), Spicks and Specks (842,000), City Homicide (796,000) and Hungry Beast (551,000).

In hindsight, it also left newly launched Nine shows, including The Apprentice Australia, homeMADE and Australia’s Perfect Couple in its wake.

Celebrity MasterChef peaked at 1.92m. Nine indicates Hey Hey peaked at 2.64m viewers.

  1. Yes I weakened and watched Hey Hey, haven’t watched it all yet, watched the first half this morning at 10am, watching part 2 at 2030 tonight, been good to date, well done to Dazza and the whole cast production team (for the first bit *chortle*)

  2. David could you confirm this. the 2.16m is major capitals only. If the pizza shop business in regional nsw last night is to be believe. lots of regional people were also watching. What would the true figure be?

    1. Yes 5 capitals for 7:30- 10pm. Including regionals it was 3.15m for the same time frame. Any talk of “true figures” be they 5 capital city or regionals is still another 24 hrs away due to the overrun.

  3. @ Lou – who cares if American celebrities were watching? Do they hold the bar that we must all strive to? That is probably the most ridiculous comment on here so far this morning. Look at the amount of rubbish that comes from the US?

  4. I remember a few weeks ago how that ABC Skippy special did a surprising number.
Australia is obsessed with nostalgia and mediocrity at the moment. The network who can find the best blend of this wins.

  5. Wow can’t believe the harsh reactions of some here – what is it exactly that people want?

Do you want expensive American Cops & Robbers show at the expense of our local industry?

Do you want a largely unfunny ‘comedian’ with his crappy shows littering the 10 Schedule with pathetic ratings?

What I loved about the show was that it showcased new talent, there is so much talent out there struggling to get some exposure, Cassie Davis, sure her act was a bit weird but great that she got such a huge forum to showcase her talent, same with the Art of North or whoever they were, this is what TV is about.

Perhaps people need worry less about their perceptions of Daryl and more about what this show (and others like it) actually does for local industry.

The show breezed through, didn’t feel anything like 3 hours at all, Daryl and the rest of the cast looked great, comfortable and there were many laugh out loud moments.

  6. Neon Kitten, your credibility totally died at 9:17 am. “truly awful television” – what crap. You have no concept at all of what constitutes good TV. Were you working at nine’s programming department 10 years ago? That would explain a lot.

  7. This what Media analyst Steve Allen said yesterday:

“Celebrity MasterChef will win hands down…I predict MasterChef will do around 1.5 million viewers nationally and Hey Hey will do around 1.2 million.”

I don’t think we will hearing from Steve today!

  8. @Stan, those aren’t good for you or the environment, so no they’re not fun or good. Hey Hey is a great show, with great characters (plucka, Ossie, etc) and has also been a very important show for live entertainment and variety. Since it left while those who are from overseas or from Australia and in the entertainment industry haven’t had much place to go to to promote their new movie, music, etc. Hey Hey was a great place for that and would give them a decent showing, able to appear thoughout the show and on many segements.

As much as I love Rove, that’s the only place they can really get to these days and after speaking for about 2 minutes Rove then gives them a ‘public probe’ or ‘final five’ then they’re pushed out the door.

I hope Nine can return Hey Hey permanently. I wish it never left. Also if Daryl isn’t there to host all the time, they can get guest hosts. I remember they would have Lano & woodley host the show in the past at times.

  9. “The love being displayed for this merely serves to evidence the gulf between artistic merit and popularity.”

Exactly, quality TV lags behind what the masses watch mindlessly. Hey Hey looked plain embarrassing. From outdated gags, to an ugly set, to poor SD quality, and “we’re doing it for the paycheck” jokes, I was glad no American celebrities were in town to see how low we can go.

Now wonder people watched it in droves, they simply wanted the nostalgic feel. Let’s see what effect time will have on the ratings once the honeymoon period is over.

  10. Only been in Oz for 3 years so avoided Hey Hey. I watched every episode of Masterchef but found the celebrity version dull. Something major was lacking. Also it smelt a bit with Matt Moran and Kirk being best mates. Surely they could have got another chef than his mate??? NCIS LA was also a big let down so perhaps I should have watched Hey Hey after all?

  11. “Welcome Home” channel 9. Welcome to My home. Thank you 9 for Hey Hey. We laughed and laughed and laughed for 3hrs. There aren’t too many shows now-a-days where the whole family can sit together without a show resorting to what seems like the norm theses days i.e, sex, swearing, killings, eliminations. I know theses types have always been there but there’s just less of Hey Hey type shows. For once, i sat with my whole family without fear (even during adds). Channel 9 has good through tough times lately, and deservingly so, but last night, no matter if you loved it or not, they should be applauded. My family felt happy last night and we all feel happy today, just by watching Hey Hey. I did grow up watching it morn and afternoon. I am a 40 yr old male, and proud to say. Do yourself a favor ch9 and read all posts, blogs, reviews that are on the net. The people have spoken. More Hey Hey type shows and channel 9, you will be “Still the one” once again. Congrats.

  12. I switched across out of curiosity and nostalgia and was quite surprised how well it held up. It works well as a family variety show anyone can watch – something that is missing from tv these days.

Sure it still had some of the same jokes but was still quite funny. As long as Daryl keeps away from doing the air drums and bringing back his Tattoo and Dracula impersonations!

Of course this was much better than a usual Hey Hey episode – how would it hold up as a weekly show again?

MasterChef was excellent too (PVRs are great!) as it was still all about the cooking. But as a 1 hour show against a 2.5 hour live event I was always going to choose the latter.

  13. Neon Kitten you went a bit far here. Hey Hey is a show we need to have back on Australian tv. I for one have no time for Rove with his homophobic gags and lame humour. Hey Hey was witty and entertaining and showed Rove how it should be done.

Live tv these days rarely happens, tv like radio is too scripted and slick. I for one hope Hey Hey stays. Neon Kitten why don’t you watch something else if you don’t like it. Even after the hype of the reunion shows Aussies will still watch it. Big deal if you won’t

  14. @ slam – those figures will be adjusted around midday to reflect what went to air, they need to wait for the stations to finalise their overnight schedules.
    Patience……

  15. Once Hey Hey is back to being a weekly show (which based on the ratings, is bound to happen), I’ll be happy to see the show cut down in length, as it did drag on a bit last night. That said, it was a fun watch, and brought back a ton of memories.

@SwaySlayer: Look for the “Australia” episode from the latest season of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. Changed my opinion about Matt Preston completely (in a good way).

  16. The notably empty pub last night where I play trivia every Wednesday night to usually a full house goes to show where most people were last night – at home watching HHIS and CMC! Amazing what effect event TV can have on people’s social calendars!

  17. The country needs it’s collective head read for watching Hey Hey. I watched it for 5 mins and recoiled as Darryl attempted to know what Facebook was.

I guess the adage ‘everything 80’s is new again’ is ringing true for 9!

I do agree that something needs to be done to the OzTam system to adjust figures so they aknowledge programs over/under runs. The figures for the Apprentice are not actually the figures for the Apprentice and are misleading. With networks routinely over running to stymie channel changing I think this ugrnetly needs to be addressed to protect the integrity of the system (do you agree David?)

  18. Well Done, Darryl, Well Done ch.9. I have never every connected with Darryl, always found him to be a smug crude businessman behind the fasade. Last night was the first time in the last 30 odd years I found him to come across as genuine and gracious. Darryl dont let this huge victory and vote of confidense get to your head, and good luck with ep 2, next week. Im sure it will do just as well

  19. how does it feel Neon to have so many people thinking you’re off your rocker… i think your time and comments on this formum…largely anti channel 9 and everything the network does…shows i think you have lost Your touch… if anything…. Australian television got a shot in the arm last night…and the ratings show, that something has been lacking and missing for a while and it is needed back in a hurry…maybe not on a weekly basis, but it is needed, and it doesnt has to be Hey Hey (although that would be great)…it wasn’t luck …it wasn’t old …it wasn’t crap… cheeky good natured and clean humor that i thought my kids could happily watch and enjoy and they loved it…good music and clips and segments that a whole generation havent seen…it has legs…lets hope some one give it a go…

  20. Well I am surprised but CMC still put is a good showing for it’s one hour. So now the Rafter drop from 1st to 3rd for the week and I guess this will seal Nine winning a 4th week in a row, come on Seven fast track 72 Now!

BTW I didn’t watch it (apart from checking it out during one ad break) but I’ll watch/record it Saturday night when it was meant to be on.

I just hope this doesn’t lead to a return of the show full time on 2010…
