Idol: Movie & Theatre themes
Idol is turning to stage and screen for an upcoming theme night.

Next Idol theme revealed by TEN will be a “Movie / Theatre” theme show.
To air on October 18th, TEN says “If you can’t imagine Titanic without Celine, Wayne’s World without Queen, and Chicago without all that jazz, then tonight’s show is for you!”
This week is P!nk night while Big Band, with guest Harry Connick Jr., follows on October 11th.
Despite it having Theatre in the mix, it’s hard to think a Rodgers & Hammerstein tune might make it into the show. What about Les Miserables, Phantom or Cats?
And guest judges? Susan Boyle with ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ perhaps?
Didn’t think so.

It is excruciating enough watching the singers “sing” the songs (and I use the word ‘sing’ loosely), but the judges are even worse. Boring, no personality and inconsistent, I can’t even watch it anymore, and neither do my teenagers.
Maybe Tim Campbell could be a judge. He has done quite a bit of theatre and his Sunday night Idol twitters are far more entertaining than the show itself.
@David:
Also they’ve rejected many singers in the auditions because they chose songs from musicals. Last year one girl sang Seasons of Love pitch perfect but got rejected because it was a broadway song. Dicko said something like “broadway isn’t pop so you can’t get in because you’ll get stuck in broadway mode”… Idiot.
Perhaps Craig McLachlan as he is currently in Chicago or Gina Riley would be interesting to have as a guest judge.
It will also be interesting watching judge’s comments given Dicko and previous judges have often criticised some performance for being too musical theatre and not enough pop.
So what films have Sony catalogue songs on them? Cause that’s all they can sing…
I’m hearing whispers of Liza Minnelli doing a guest spot on an upcoming idol episode. Could this be the one?
Oooooh. She has concerts in Sydney on the two preceding days, and there is a reference to Chicago in the blurb, by her key composers Kander & Ebb. Must see TV if it’s true.
I’m so going to tune in for this, but if they ruin any of those songs.. *shakes fist in air*
I hope one of them sing Defying Gravity from Wicked. 🙂
Bruce – they’ve never had this theme before.
Booooring. Same themes every year.
Still crap regardless of these themes, but then Daylight savings would’ve kicked in, so perhaps they will be in the 700 or 800s with the ratings by then 🙂
And so the train wreck continues…
Do you think Kelley Abbey might come on as a cross promotion for Dance and the new version of Fame about to audition?
Someone singing the theme from Titanic would be appropriate for this sinking ship of a show. I bet someone sings Fame as well.
