Jacki Mac back on Hey Hey

Jacki MacDonald was a surprise appearance at the second Hey Hey reunion. But amongst the surprises there was one moment that will surely be remembered.

jmJacki MacDonald was a surprise appearance at the second Hey Hey it’s Saturday reunion.

After a week of speculation, the longtime Hey Hey performer returned alongside Daryl Somers. Her appearance put to an end some media reports she would not front.

MacDonald appeared in one of her classic segments, (fake) Chooklotto.

She was the second of two fond reunions, following the return of Ossie Ostrich and 80yo Ernie Carroll.

The show also acknowledge some of it supporting cavalcade of characters including Denise Drysdale, JoBeth Taylor, Trevor Marmalade, Penne Dennison, Animal, Lucky Phil, Rhonda Burchmore, Colin Lane, Frank Woodley and regular guests including Nathan Cavileri, a clip of Ricky May and 2 songs from Harry Connick Jr.

But a Red Faces sketch which saw a Jackson Five routine revived hit a sour note with Harry Connick Jr. who was offended by its dated humour. In the show that ran for nearly 3.5 hrs, Connick Jr. addressed the issue on air with Somers in the closing minutes of the show.

  1. Isn’t it funny with all the racist jargon going on right now that people are too busy to see that it happens a lot……everywhere….. eg: A movie made in America last year called tropic thunder where Robert Downey Jr portrays…….What??!!……A black person…well my god it doesn’t seem to apply for us all does it?…….It didn’t offend me then and it doesn’t now….humans are really losing their sense of humor…Again hey hey was a blast from the past and maybe it should stay there, maybe it shouldn’t.
    I loved it!

  2. The reunion shows were good but dont think Nine would bring it full time in 2010.It was great too see jackie Gee she looked amazing ,but damm shame more on air time was not given to Denise Drysdale and Jo Beth Taylor.

  3. I got tingles down my spine when Ossie appeared. Felt like I was eight years old again. That, along with the appearance of Jackie and Animal were the hits in an otherwise mostly miss affair. Good to relive old memories but the words old and tired came to mind in relation to the show and Ernie Carroll the minute Ossie opened his beak.

I think someone needs to prod the remains with a stick to make sure it is well and truly dead now. If I want to reminisce I’ll pull out the old Daryl and Ossie cassettes.

As for the Jacksons… I liked the boys but I can’t believe there wasn’t a producer who thought this might be a problem for HCJ.

  4. Great to see Jacki back – Although they overdid the ‘Folks are dumb” audio track esp as it wasn’t a sure thing she would come on.

I think last weeks show was tighter. This weeks show seemed to be mouring itself (and we already had that 10 years ago) rather than just focussing on doing a “regular” show I think the show would rate well (mainly because of the lack of other local entertainment shows) if they brought it back but whether it would be worth the production costs is another question. The reunion shows made me realise that Darryl simply introduced/linked the funny stuff and wasn’t really entertaining himself.

  5. I thought it was a decent follow up effort, loved seeing Jacki again!
I was disappointed that other key members (such as Jo Beth Taylor) were shunted into other segments. I wasn’t expecting a retrospective lookback at their time on the show, but having them return and exchange pleasant words… then resuming the show… didn’t set the world on fire with me.

Would like to see the show return – although it would be tough being able to satisfy both old time fans, while catering to new audiences. I’d be satisfied with either a yearly installment (similar to The Panel’s christmas wrap), several shows per year (say one a month), or as a summer or late season (re: Footy Show timeslot) replacement.

  6. Gold! Debate (here and elsewhere) among Australians about if it’s offensive and if people are all to serious to not find it funny. Yes I watched some of Hey Hey back in the day but I didn’t need to watch any reunions to enjoy my evening (not with the fantastic line-up ABC has on Wed nights [S&S, Hungry Beast and United States of Tara]).

The Gold bit, I get to sit and watch USA and the World poke fun at Australians (with no doubt the consensus being that we are racist and backward [throw in insensitive too]). All largely due to some Channel 9 decisions (which they simply based on the ratings they’d get, again they thought it would be funny to an Australian audience and by the looks of the debate quite a number did….. says allot, pure Gold [at over $1,000 an once that’s great value]).

Where the Bloody Hell are you Australia?
