Jacki Mac back on Hey Hey

Jacki MacDonald was a surprise appearance at the second Hey Hey reunion. But amongst the surprises there was one moment that will surely be remembered.

jmJacki MacDonald was a surprise appearance at the second Hey Hey it’s Saturday reunion.

After a week of speculation, the longtime Hey Hey performer returned alongside Daryl Somers. Her appearance put to an end some media reports she would not front.

MacDonald appeared in one of her classic segments, (fake) Chooklotto.

She was the second of two fond reunions, following the return of Ossie Ostrich and 80yo Ernie Carroll.

The show also acknowledge some of it supporting cavalcade of characters including Denise Drysdale, JoBeth Taylor, Trevor Marmalade, Penne Dennison, Animal, Lucky Phil, Rhonda Burchmore, Colin Lane, Frank Woodley and regular guests including Nathan Cavileri, a clip of Ricky May and 2 songs from Harry Connick Jr.

But a Red Faces sketch which saw a Jackson Five routine revived hit a sour note with Harry Connick Jr. who was offended by its dated humour. In the show that ran for nearly 3.5 hrs, Connick Jr. addressed the issue on air with Somers in the closing minutes of the show.

  1. Enjoyed the last couple of shows, but definetly think that’s enough. Maybe could handle one or two shows a year, but weekly – HHIS is past it. Seeing Nathan Cavileri return and Lano and Woodley together was a blast though!
Was it just me, or did anyone else notice that Daryl kept mentioning (a lot) that last night’s show “was the last, ever” – it just felt was he trying to get more pull to get it up again?

  2. @ Mathew. Too right there’s a double-standard here. If, say, Saturday Night Live did a skit satirising a famous, recently dead Australian, or a sketch denigrating aboriginals, we’d all be screaming our heads off about insensitive Yanks. The producers of this segment deserve to be sacked immediately for their appalling lapse in judgement and taste.

  3. Last week the show was rubbish. I didn’t watch this week but it looks like it’s sunk to even lower levels and become embarassing offensive rubbish. Of course black-face and golliwog wigs are offensive – and not just to Americans! For goodness sake! How old are we? Have we been living in a hole for the last few decades??? Australia is now being ridiculed throughout the world on the net and in the press. And we thoroughly deserve it, especially given so many “apologists” and justifications for this appalling sketch that I’m reading in here.

  4. I personally was not offended by the act. I wonder how it could get past a raft of producers. I suppose they forgot there was one American in the studio.

  5. Just heard on the morning radio news that the HHIS Jackson Jive skit has been picked up by US media and is getting a very bad reaction. Apparently, it is on the defamer website, and has had a run on some TV shows. This was always going to happen and it makes Australia look so bad. I cannot believe this was OK’d for airing. Absolutely disgraceful. Blackface is never, ever acceptable, under any circumstances. For these doctors to say they meant no offence? They must be dills, which makes the fact that they are doctors (who are usually smart) all the more surprising. HHIS has had its day, please, consign it to the trash where it belongs.

  6. Cannot belive it is an issue.MJ was black.Black people exsist. What is the big deal?Molly’s segments are the best. What about that visit to Thailand as per Dickie Knee.Maybe that’s sexist or rascist too??The world is too serious.

  7. Loved it, ossie was great and jackie looked so happy that she decided to appear. Seeing daryl, jackie and ossie together behind the desk brought back great memories . One slip up, but the 2 shows as a whole should not be judged on that. Glad daryl acknowledged and apologised, harry accepted the apology, lets move on. Please 9 bring hey hey its saturday back.

  8. I caught a few minutes of Hey Hey when I saw this article. For me Hey Hey is dated. I’m sorry I don’t find it funny. Daryl flapping about and I just find the whole show offensive. It’s just not right for this century. And to offend someone as lovely as Harry Connick Jnr you must be doing something wrong.

  9. As prevoiusly said some people are so sensitive, this day and age which relate to the last with the last few comments made,it’s a real shame in this day and age.Society in general will never take a step forward with those sorts of comments

  10. I really do think the Jackson Jive sketch was done too soon after his death.

While I don’t think that it was racist, I don’t really think it was that funny either.

But I can see how Harry Connick Jr was upset about it.

However, look at how Darryl Brohman painted himself up to be Fui Fui Moi Moi on The Footy Show – that wasn’t racist.

  11. Ok, so even if you don’t think blackface is offensive (no, it doesn’t offend you, but it offends blacks), really, do you think it’s good television? Good comedy? Even in a Red Faces sketch? Were we supposed to have a warm nostalgic feeling for those lamers? It stank the first time around too. I really have to question the producer’s judgment on this. Even the old Kamahl crap was trotted out.

And, by the way, some of you just don’t get it. Blackface Is offensive. It’s patronising, racist and condescending. Yeah, it’s not a burning cross. Yeah, it’s not a paediatric cancer ward. But it’s still an ugly image. That’s why we haven’t seen it on television for 20 years. Until these morons brought it back.

The contrast between Hey Hey and modern state-of-the-art comedy/variety like, say, Good News Week, is stark.

Channel 9 is a dinosaur. The sooner the internet kills it, the better. Daryl Somers has no wit, and too often his arrogance and condescension creeps through, despite his too obviously manufactured nice-guy veneer.

  12. Harry Connick didn’t want his image tarnished via youtube etc,and for Daryl to kiss his ass as the yanks say, was quite pathetic. Personally i was about as outraged as the chasers make a wish skit.

  13. Was so great to see Ossie again. I hope that isn’t the last we hear/see from him.

Certainly hope that Hey Hey can return to our screens again on a regular basis complete with Red, Plucka, Wilbur, Dicky Knee and gang (possibly Molly too, please?).. and if he’s feeling up to it a visit time to time from Ossie.

  14. RE: the future of the show.

I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t model itself off what The Panel did and have a christmas eve/day or boxing day special once a year. It could easily sustain that at least.

Would a “Hey Hey its Christmas” lead-in to the carols work well do you think?

  15. @ Stephen Bayne. The difference between Family Guy and Hey Hey is that Hey Hey doesn’t bill it’s self as edgy and post modern…. it bills it’s self as family friendly.

The only thing those shows have in common is they both are pretty lame.

  16. I didn’t see all of it, but at 3 hours it was far too long and Jo Beth is still hot
(for someone who’s 38) and should get hired by Nine, either to host, or co-host a new HH series in 2010, or do something else. She isn’t that old at 56, but I greatly doubt Jackie will make another public TV appearance, or will appear occasionally on any proposed new HH series.

High ratings are great, but Nine’s probem is, are they willing to spend the bucks,
as HH isn’t cheap to make. They should commission it (for Saturday nights) and find several very willing commercial sponsors to come on board, to help defray the costs. They’ll just have to find replacements for Molly and Red, who are with Seven.

  17. I was at work while the show was on so I only got to see a little of the show. But the little I saw left me thinking WTF!! How the hell can an act like that get on air, why didn’t any of the staff at Hey Hey it’s Saturday see that it wouldn’t go down well, and how can a bunch of doctors ( doctors are usually believed to be smart) think something like that would be funny! It was bad enough painting their faces black, but making a parody of the ‘King ot pop’ so soon after he died was(to put it nicely) a stupid ting to do. I think the staff at Hey Hey it’s Saturday need to have some practise at seeing things through someone else’s eyes, and get their head out of whatever world they are living in.
I’m so glad Harry C jr did what he did.

  18. Well, I hope they reply this one – it went 1 hour over time so I’ve missed the last 45 mins, having buffered my recording by 15 minutes, just in case!

  19. Once again a great show.Harry Connick Jr comment was a bit surprising, alot of people seem a bit to sensitive this day and age.It was a segment that was just a bit of fun and no more than that.He said he could see the funny side in it,so why comment in the first place

  20. @Stephen Bayne I can’t agree with that, I was stunned when I saw it, I don’t need someone to tell me something is wrong and I know I am not the only one.

  21. yeah but it was like only 7pm here and i dont even have facebook and twitter so i dont care if it is all over that and that how i dont know i am sick of hearing about those 2 websites i only use my space but no one ever thinks of wa that why on message boards they put spoiler now
