Racy relations in new Safran series

John Safran's Race Relations, is already copping a media slapping -and it hasn't even aired yet.

5John Safran’s upcoming TV series, John Safran’s Race Relations, is already copping a media slapping -and it hasn’t even aired yet.

The Australian Family Association described the show as “filth”.

“It’s offensive and it’s in bad taste and it’s certainly not something that kids should be exposed to,” spokesperson John Morrissey told the Herald Sun.

But Morrissey didn’t indicate whether he had seen the series which will premiere on ABC1 on October 21st. Airing at 9:30pm the show falls safely into an MA timeslot.

Amongst some of the claims against the content, are Safran simulating sex acts to an image of US President Barack Obama, stealing women’s underwear to do a “sniff test” and coaxing a Palestinian film crew member to masturbate to pornography in an Israeli sperm bank.

Safran has always been the subject of controversy: rifling through Ray Martin’s garbage, streaking naked through Jerusalem wearing only a St Kilda scarf and beanie, trying to coerce Shane Warne into breaking a “no smoking” rule, being ‘exorcised’ of demons and participating in a crucifixion ritual in the Philippines.

Sounds like nothing’s changed!

  1. This show looks great! I think it will wype the floor with the slackly written Chaser because this guy has ideas! He is such a cool creative force and I have loved all of his productions. Inspirational to a generation of videographers and food for geeks.
Cant wait! I hope its on a wednesday.

  2. @Someone BBBA, Well Said! People often let groups like these spread their hatred because their beliefs are disguised as “family groups.” I feel sorry for these “families” that teach children to hate anyone different than you 🙁

  3. The Australian Family Association are essentially just another Christian hate group along the lines of the Australian Christian Lobby, Festival of Light and Salt Shakers etc etc. The only thing which separates them from these other organisations is that they don’t explicitly state their religious dogma every single time they make a public comment on something. This effectively enables them to come off as more “mainstream” when they speak out on issues such as “the break down of family structures”, but deep down they are very much a part of the extreme religious right movement in Australia.

  4. Safran has always pushed the envelope and I can’t wait to see his latest offering.

The fact that some right wing “family” association is describing it as filth will probably add to the ratings – not take them away, to see what all the fuss is about.

  5. So why the hell would kids be watching at 9.30PM?

Perhaps as the spokesman for the ‘Family’ (religious zealot) group, perhaps he should advocate good parenting.

Or not, just beat the bible and force minority views on the rest of us…

Fear of Islam? They don’t bitch about tv shows and picket studios (Californication/Ten/second episode??). I fear hardcore christians…

  6. I often see mention of the “Australian Family Association” in the media but I’ve never seen any real description of what it is. Is it a registered organisation with hundreds or even thousands of members, or is it just some angry little person in their bedroom at their PC?

  7. If a group has the name “Family” in their title there is usually a lot of hate, homophobia and prejudice spewing from them. Go Saffron! It will be good to have you back!

  8. Anything the Australian Family Association says is completely irrelevant to the real world.

I do wonder whether SBS actually slipped a copy of the first episode to John Morrissey, knowing full well that he’d do a typical fundamentalist overreaction and get the show firmly planted in the headlines.

After all, pretending to be controversial worked pretty well for Vegemite Smooth last week, didn’t it? 😉

  9. I am really starting to get pissed off with all these PC and bible-thumping wowsers. First it was the Chaser then that crappy skit show on Seven. And now it’s Magda, Hungry Beast and Safran’s turn.

The show is being shown at an adult timeslot and “kids” should not be watching the TV at that time of night, They should be in their bedrooms watching porn or snuff films on the internet.

Go and live in the bible belt of America if you get offended by shows you claim not to watch.

  10. “But Morrissey didn’t indicate whether he had seen the series…” says it all really.

These “family” people are nothing but backwards thinking, counter-social nitwits in need of a serious dose of fun every once in a while.
