Ray Martin from cover to cover

Ray Martin is on the promotional trail for his new autobiography in the lead up to Christmas sales.

ray_martinRay Martin’s new autobiography, Ray: Stories of my Life, notes how his father George Grace was a violent drinker who would beat his wife and family.

The book tells how the family fled to Adelaide when Ray was just 11 years old. His mother changed their surname to Martin.

Today he tells the Daily Telegraph his father once tried to see him in 1979 when he was launching 60 Minutes: “He came to the (Channel 9) gatehouse and left a number. I never called. It would have been a slap in the face for Mum, who was well and truly alive at the time.”

Grace died in 1984.

The book, which is launched today, would no doubt be an interesting glimpse into Nine during some of its glory days.

Publisher Nikki Christer says, “He tells hilarious stories of his early years in ABC radio, living and working in the States where he was posted for ten years, and where he followed such stories as Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

“The groundbreaking and often dangerous TV journalism that was 60 Minutes and moving from there to The Midday Show, such a different style of television with its entertainment stories and endless cavalcade of stars. A Current Affair follows, and the stories about his relationship with Channel 9 are fascinating and illuminating.

“There is much in this manuscript that will surprise readers and people who think they know Ray from the years of welcoming him into their home.”

Martin spoke yesterday of asking Kerry Packer what his future was, not long after one of Packer’s heart attacks.

“He bellowed back: ‘I don’t know what my f . . . ing future is’.”

Martin will be travelling to Oz bookstores from Monday through to December 15th, signing books and

How do we get one signed for the Paxtons?

  1. @ ray martin posts i am sure alot of things happened in his life probably all true, my point is that as he had no contact with his father from 11 years of age, and then at a later date refused to have anthing to do with him, i just wonder why he has plenty of sorrow for what happens in the world around him but no feelings for his father, sorry for offending all diehard fans of martin enjoy the book and make sure his best friend/ good bloke/often interviewed micheal crawford gets a signed copy

  2. It’s an unfortunate pity, but also a joke as well, Nine can’t accomodate a class act (as a journalist) like Martin in some way, now that they’ve gone in the
dumbed down news and journalism format, as Seven have.

  3. @Frankie So he can’t talk about something that had such a major inpact on his life? We don’t know if he came to forgive his father or not, but it’s his story to tell. As the old journalistic saying goes, “all we owe the dead is the truth”.

  4. gee mr. martin is there a need to bring this up about your father, 25 years dead cannot defend himself all the name of your life story, shame on you and your 11 year old mentality, to up yourself to forgive your father , ray martin your a joke

  5. FYI Ray is appearing at Werribee Plaza on 02/12/09 – I”m trying desperately to host the book signing (Done a couple in my time, Max Walker in Ballarat and Vasili in Northland :))
