Angry Boys for 2011

It's a case of good things come to those who wait for Chris Lilley fans.

It’s a case of good things come to those who wait, with confirmation that Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys isn’t hitting our screens until next year.

The ABC TV, US network HBO and the BBC series continues filming, this week filming at the beachside town of Torquay, past Geelong.

Streets are being closed off as the main street, beaches and surrounding bushland are used as locations with over 200 local residents playing extras and small roles. Last week the show was filming at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong.

“We’ve been shooting the show since November 2009 and most of the series has been on closed sets, so to be out in the public is very exciting,” says Lilley.

Producer Laura Waters adds, “The local people of Torquay have been so welcoming and the location is going to look amazing on screen. We will be bringing the beauty of this Victorian beach to the world.”

Director of ABC Television Kim Dalton says, “We’re proud of our ongoing association with Chris Lilley. We know Angry Boys will be another landmark television series for ABC TV.

“We are particularly proud that with this series Chris is going international and audiences in Australia, the USA and the UK are keenly awaiting its premiere.”

Despite the distant launch date for the series, ABC will still have the show’s World Premiere.

  1. I have loved Chris’s past two series, really thought they were excellent…but what’s the story here? If you’re shooting started in November 2009, why would it not air until 2011? There must be going on…what a lot of people don’t recall is that both his past series did do extensive re-shoots because the frist time around wasn’t good enough. If other aussie shows had this luxury they’d be way better too.

Perhaps the enormous pressure is now getting to Chris…because SHH was such a huge and great success..and youse all know how Aussies like to ‘Tall Poppy’ people!!!

  2. Stan – there are no guarantees. But the last two series Chris Lilley has created have honestly been some of the best comedy Australia has ever seen. He knows how to create iconic characters, catch phrases that enter the vernacular (I’m a school teacher and do you know how many times I’ve heard “Puck You Miss – no, it’s with a P, so you can’t get mad!!”) and also, his shows are damn funny. At the same time, they have real heart and really get to you – at the conclusion of Jonah’s story in SHH – I was genuinely eeling very emotional at this boy who had finally been kicked out of the system, but for his own sense of personal pride, tried to still fulfil the goal created for him by his special needs teacher – I did shed a few tears. On the opposite end – have loved Ja’ime since We Could Be Heroes – she is superficial and manipulative and I love it!! Mr G – amaing! Pat – loved her, shed a few tears. Can’t remember his name, but the guy who had the “hot air balloon” experience was just hilarious!

So, No – there is no guarantee. But based on the two series he has been directly responsible for writing and performing in (I don’t count the work he did on Channel 7 – he wan’t in the power position there) – I have every faith he will create something interesting and entertaining. If not – well, he won’t be the first person to fail. But I truly believe that he has the intellect and talent to create something wonderful – who would have thought that an ABCMockumentary would become an integral part of Australian culture? But it did, and I have a good feeling Angry Boys will do the same!!

  3. @Stan, I’m not expecting this to be another Summer Heights High. Not sure how you can exactly expect another series of that.

I think anything Chris does will be great. He just does great characters. I still feel a bit sad about Pat Mullins (from ‘We Can Be Heroes’) to this day! 🙁

  4. It’s too bad Chris Lilley can’t fly under the radar anymore because everyone is expecting this to be another Summer Heights High. Who knows, it could be s**t? If it is, than everyone out there in TV Land really will be Angry Boys. Maybe we shouldn’t hold our breath? Just a thought…

  5. Is this similar to The Pacific (which also involved HBO), which was filmed around Victoria and North Queensland in 2008, but would only finally air this March?
