Some startling quotes from the always colourful Seven CEO David Leckie appear in today’s Sunday Telegraph.
During an interview with Matthew Johns, Leckie reportedly walked into the room with circulation figures on Pacific magazines, part of the Seven group. He impressed upon Johns, and by the sound of things reporter Phil Rothfield, how much promotion he could give the new NRL show Seven is planning for 7:30pm Thursdays.
In doing so, he revealed quite a bit more about other shows.
Here are some select Leckie quotes from the Sunday Telegraph article:
“We’re going to promote the s*** out of this f***ing show. We’ve gotta let people know how good it’s going to be,” he said.
“I want a couple of million a night. It’s the truth. That’s what I’m hoping for. I’ve known Matthew on and off for over 10 years and I’ve known (John) Singleton since I was born. I personally think there’s a big hole for a show like this and we’re putting it in a great timeslot.
“We’re having an argument about the name. Singo rang me 10 minutes ago about the name. I told him to f*** off – it’s my network.”
He also let drop his thoughts on Cougar Town.
“It will be one of the most creative moves we’ve made. We’re in very good shape at this network. OK, the Cougar Town, it’s a s*** show but we promote it and we get nearly 1.4 million watching it.”
Finally he adds:
“I look at it this way: Matthew in my view is an outstanding television talent and, my God, we’re very happy he’s here. We’ve got Kyle Sandilands as well. So, f***ing hell, do you think I’m worried about Matthew? Kyle. He’s on fire!”
Is it a worry that the Seven boss knew he was attending a media interview or more of a worry that perhaps he didn’t?

if this footy sohw is going in at 7.30 thursdays whats going to happen to the white room?
Time to go David Leckie, the world has changed. Singo, Matty Johns, Kyle! It just gets worse every year. Who do advertisers want to reach?
@Michael – ahh yes, Master Chief – I remember that Halo reality series Ten ran last year. That sure was a load of garbage, wasn’t it?
oh dear. This guy is running a network? What an erratic jerk.
Wow, what a surprise, Leckie is arrogant. Do you think he got where he is by being super-sweet. And for those of you who think he’s dumb, you are deluded. The fact they managed to get 1.4 million out of Cougar Town is business genius. People in commercial television do think the general public are stupid lemmings who’ll watch anything. It’s the way it is. And most of the time they’re right so as long as the advertising slots are filled to the maximum revenue bracket, that’s all they care about.
What an awful CEO. He should watch his language and stop being selfish.
Who thinks Leckie should open a Twitter account, just like Peter Luck?
@ jezza – spot on 7 treat their viewers like idiots because they mostly are idiots, how else do you explain the ratings for their god awful “factuals”. Leckie comes across as a massive bogan and if he thinks the new NRL show will get within light years of 2 million he’s tripping!
Leckies right about Cougar town – it is a s**t show!
Its ratings have been falling steadily in the US and has only survived because of the lead in from the number one new comedy of year “Modern Family”.
Expect Cougar to fall to around 900,000 in Australia within the next few weeks.
Not good when the network boss doesn’t like the show, I like Cougar Town but they promoted it wrong, it will be interesting to see how much it drops in the coming weeks.
Yikes. The only good thing about the man seems to be that he at least justifies a lot of our unbridled hatred of Channel 7.
Pretty much sums up sevens attitude towards its viewers
leckie ain’t too bright. should have watched it before you bought the rights you idiot
Wouldn’t be the first time a sh1t show toped the ratings; Big Brother, Idol, Master Chief, much of the garbage Ten come up with starts well – it sure says something about the Australian audience doesn’t it…..
I have one word for you Dave.. “retire” before you embarrass yourself, your family and Seven anymore than you have already!
Umm was Leckie drunk?
A couple of million for the NRL show they are coming up with? HAHA, he’s joking right? They’ll be lucky to get 600-700k, if that. I never watch the Footy Show on Nine anymore, because ONE’s TNL is all i need. I doublt i’ll be watching Seven’s abomination.
As for Cougar Town, well i haven’t/don’t watch it so i can’t say much, but a comment like that from the channel’s CEO is very bold.
So Leckie don’t give a stuff about the 5:30 decline, in Brisbane, caused by the axing of one of his own creations from his stint at 9… I can almost see the reaction, there would be so much cursing, Gordon Ramsey would be asking for Leckie to stop swearing.
In True Leckie vein; I f****** hate him.
Leckie is such an arrogant tosser; he takes the shine off The Seven Network with his stupid arogant statements.
I hate that this mentality still exists, where a CEO whose favourite shows include sport and Benny Hill repeats, so everything else is s*** especially if the lead character is female. Go back to 1974!
I guess there will be lots of interesting comments on the ‘Leckie’ Interview’ that perhaps wasn’t an interview.
All I could do was laugh…………Only time & we the viewers will tell what happens next.
he sounds like a real tosser. no wonder he wants to put other tossers on his channel
anti-lol
there is no correlation between how long he has known people for and whether they are good on air talent. it doesn’t matter how much they promote their football show, I will never watch.
lol, sounds like he doesn’t have a clue about anything. The problem with 7 and 9 is they havnt embraced the online world and thats where everything happens these days so listen to us!
