Today gets by with a little help from the Olympics

Nine's Today show had its first weekly win over Seven's Sunrise in six years.

Nine’s Today show had its first weekly win over Seven’s Sunrise in six years.

It finished with 359,000 viewers to 343,000, Monday – Friday.

Nine’s win will undoubtedly have been given a shot in the arm by the Olympics, including their live crosses to Vancouver. Last week Today also had 3 days of exterior shoots in Melbourne where it performs best.

But there is no doubt there is a swing back to Nine’s breakfast show, despite Seven revamping its set and format -the latter even got Grant Denyer back for the weather.

Seven has also suggested there were some coding changes in Brisbane by Nine.

But Seven’s real concern is some viewers may well stick with Nine once the Olympics end. What will the Cash Cow moo then?

  1. I find the Today show to be boring, actually. It’s all too stilted and trying to be “perfect” that it just seems to rub me the wrong way. I try to avoid it as much as possible, even down to the point I’d rather miss the beginning of the Olympic coverage (not that there’s much of that, in either quantity or quality!) rather than sit through a few minutes of the show. ;p

  2. i’m slowly moving back to Today more and more. i just wish they had a better set. it is like something from a community television show. i love when they do exterior shoots.

  3. again the regionals obivously dont count, but Today consistantly beats Sunrise in the market where I live…must appeal to the regional people, and we dont have to watch idiots outside 7’s martin Place studio,

  4. RE: Coding Changes

Apparently 8-9am in Brisbane is coded as “Today”,When it is actually Winter Olympics coverage. This is due to Today going live into Brisbane.

  5. I’m the complete opposite to danj. I can’t stand Beretta, but like the other three. Grant Denyer was also a stupid decision to bring him back, don’t like him, it’s been good with James Tobin on last week.

  6. Good for Today.
It’s much more interesting for the viewer when the two shows are neck a neck and competing for every single viewer. Congrats to Today.

But 1 week out of 312…. they have a way to got yet.

  7. Cosing changes? What does this mean? It saw Kutsy say something about it too…

So all it take for Nine to win 1 (possibly 3) weeks of Today is to spend mega-bucks on an Olympics broadcast…

I shall wait until 2 weeks post-Vancouver to see what’s what.

  8. it’s a sign of things to come, they have just about caught them before the olympics and they will pass them by june. they just need too get rid of steven jacobs and this do it with ease

  9. Am I just overly cynical, or is that not really that much of a jump over Sunrise, given the ratings the Olympics are getting…

Regardless, they deserve it, it seems even with the changes Sunrise is still exceptionally samey these past couple of years.

  10. Can’t believe people actually still watch sunrise. I used to watch it but got sick of cringing all the time because Kochie, Mel and Nat just act like fools. Berets is ok though.

Karl and Lisa are good and I appreciate Karl’s humour. They should get rid of Steve Jacobs though – Not funny. And Grant Denyer is not a positive for Sunrise. What is it about little weather men acting like idiots and thinking they’re funny?

  11. If Today broadcast live in to Brisbane every morning, I would watch it (like I am doing this week and last week). I’m back to ABC2 Breakfast from next week.

  12. What’s the deal with the ‘code’ changes, how does it affect ratings?

ITA the only way Today and Nine are winning is because of the Olympics, so what will happen in a weeks time when it’s gone, will it really make a difference to the whole year?
