  1. As long as there are no unaccompanied women in the audience, and viewers with no intelligence for the “Matty Johns’ Show” (absence of the apostrophe in the official title doesn’t bode well), all should be ok. By the way – shouldn’t there be an age limit for people to be called “matty” ? Would have thought leaving high school would be the cut-off – mate.

  2. “The Matty Johns Show” eh?

What is with Channel 7 and variety show titles? So very lame.

I can see the show doing OK for the first week, possibly for a few weeks due to the interest factor plus the fact that the NRL Footy Show is so bloody terrible at the moment. Also, the 7:30 Thursday timeslot is fairly light on in terms of competition.

However, I really can’t see the show lasting the whole footy season on 7. Maybe they could move it to 7TWO in order to save some face when it inevitably fails.

  3. Katie & Louise – Johns didn’t do anything wrong. The police didn’t lay charges. How can you possibly blame someone for something that they weren’t even charged with?

  4. No matter how bad The Matty Johns Show will probably turn out, nothing could be as pathetic as The NRL Footy Show is right now, and has been for the last few years.

  5. Channel 7 giving Matty Johns his own show sounds like one of those send-ups Hungry Beast does at the end of each episode. Unfortunately, this time it’s for real. The guy shouldn’t be allowed on tv, let alone have his own show. The only good thing is it won’t last long.

  6. Good luck to 7. It may work……..then on the other hand it may not, and that would only be because 7 has a habbit of canning shows after 2-3 weeks. Perhaps fine tuning would be a better option before dumping it.
9’s footy show is fairly old and ratings have been dropping each yr for a while now….Alot of people say to me they can’t stand Sam Newman, and yeah…I’m sick of him too. If seven can offer a decent show without an idiot like sam, then it’ll get alot of votes.

  7. @ Katie … I couldn’t agree more! I couldn’t watch a show with Matthew Johns ‘Starring’ without thinking about that poor woman who spoke out on Four Corners.

  8. I am tipping The Bounce will be in the Matty Johns slot in non-AFL states in a month or two. Peter Helliar has more appeal to that market (i.e. not just AFL fans, ex Rove viewers, same with “Lethal” Leigh being the former Brisbane Lions coach) and to help grow the game in Syd/Bris. Associating AFL with street parties, rather than street talk, will help the AFL not hinder it.

Any NRL product without footage must look to the original AFL Footy Show for inspiration.

  9. Not different nights. Expect the Bounce to be on Thursday nights when the teams get released. It will be on Wednesday nights for the first two rounds because Rounds 1 and 2 start on Thursday nights.

  10. despite the content, weather it will work, fail etc- why bother doing it different nights. Thu 7:30 for both shows should be enough. They will both get a headstart on The Footy Show either way. Wednesday just seems a bit early for a footy related show.

  11. I am genuinely gob-smacked Ch 7 has given Matty Johns his own show. I’m not an overly emotional female, and actually think Matty is a nice guy and good TV talent (past disgressions aside). But his Own show? Come on! What does this say about Australia’s self-proclaimed “family network” when a married man villified for his role in a sordid group football sex scandal can end up hosting a prime time TV show in his namesake? When the battle for ratings and/or NRL broadcasting rights becomes more important to a Network than upholding the brand attributes your audience so loyally and regularly wants to connect with, there’s a real issue with priorities in my humble opinion. You’ve lost me Ch 7…sorry.

  12. Where is Ghost Whisperer going? Will it fill the other night along side each show? I recon this move is stupid by Seven. They should have launched together. Stupid Seven just plain Stupid.

  13. Why can’t us Sydney viewers (and Brisbane) have The Bounce on the same night as those ‘AFL States’, instead of having it over a day later????? And it’s going to be interesting to see The Matthew Johns Show just before The NRL Footy Show.

I don’t know if they’ll go well at the 7.30 slots, but good on ya, Seven, for giving it a go

  14. this will be a huge fail. for both and there isn’t any doubt about it. the first ad to promote the new matty johns show was it’s usuall terrible bang up job 7 would do to promote the show. this will last about a month
