The Comedy Channel will switch to widescreen on April Fool's Day, April 1st.

The Comedy Channel will switch to widescreen on April Fool’s Day, April 1st.

“Mark it in your diaries and rev up your blogs – The Comedy Channel is set to commence 16.9 widscreen transmission from Thursday April 1 at 5.30am. And no, it’s not an April Fools joke. Promise. Unless something goes horribly wrong. Nahhhh, she’ll be appples. Wider apples,” says its website.

This week the channel also gets into the spirit of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, of which it is a Festival Partner.

At 9pm on Thursday the channel screens Australia’s Funniest, a one hour guide to the picks the festival, and at 10pm anarchic Canadian comedian Tom Green selects his festival favourites in Tom Green’s Best Of the Fest.

  1. @Reubot – I’ll have to check that, last time I looked it was still side black bars, but that could have been the program.

Either way they all should be 16:9, this is 2010 isn’t it?

  2. again a mention of blogs what they have been reading perhaps and if not the pressure maybe they wouldn’t have given advanced notice. Good news all the same also good they mentioned a specific time.

  3. Hopefully they air all their 16:9 shows in true format then, and not have a 4:3 version still running. When Will and Grace went to 111 Hits, rather than showing it in true 16:9 for the final few seasons, it was played at 14:9 on a widescreen channel.

  4. As someone who last subscribed to Foxtel well over a decade ago, I have to marvel… they weren’t 16:9 already??? Wow. I guess while the source broadcasters for the majority of their material have pretty much all gone HD, Comedy Channel viewers can hope for that to happen sometime in the year 2525.
