Audience numbers Bounce around for Seven

There are mixed fortunes for Seven's new football shows with its NRL version performing better than its AFL counterpart this week.

There are mixed fortunes for Seven’s new football shows after last night’s figures, in this non-ratings week.

The Matty Johns Show pulled 267,000 viewers in Sydney and 144,000 in Brisbane, beaten by Getaway (284,000 / 169,000) and The Biggest Loser (289,000, 207,000).

But The Bounce took 250,000 in Melbourne, 60,000 in Adelaide and 47,000 in Perth trailing Getaway (365,000 / 106,000  /103,000), and The Biggest Loser (301,000 / 100,000 / 133,000). In Adelaide and Perth it also lost to The 7:30 Report (81,000 / 94,000). Even more disappointment was the show being beaten by Nine’s Footy Show (363,000 / 112,000 / 101,000) at the later 9:30pm timeslot.

There was better luck in the NRL states as The Matty Johns Show stayed ahead of Nine’s NRL Footy Show 135,000 and 102,000 -but comparisons are hardly equitable given the different timeslots.

Seven’s new shows have been on air for just three weeks. Next week when schedules are running at full steam will be a much truer test of how networks are performing.

  1. Not that I have ever actually watched it, but the The Bounce must be pretty terrible to come 6th in Perth, not only after Biggest Loser, Getaway and The 7:30 Report, but also trailing Italian Food Safari on SBS ONE and Top Gear on GO!

  2. The matty johns show isn’t too bad, it’s very much a lite nrl entertainment show, as opposed to the footy show which is full on. There’s certainly room for improvement, the sketches aren’t always funny and some of the segments seem a tad too disorganised, but the football parts of the show are pretty good.

  3. The Bounce needs changes & quick before it rates even worse. They should have a “spin the wheel” segment & go live from a football club (local / country) each week. Also have news / breaking news from the week from a sports reporter.

  4. @James,

    It’s a joke, Joyce.

Er, my point is, that in 4 of 6 states we couldn’t care / don’t know who Matty Johns is (or was). He’s irrelevant in those markets.

  5. This is not a guy I want my kids watching. Seven should be absolutely ashamed.

On the bounce. helliar is not the problem. He did a great job on riove for ten years. It is simple a very old concept with half it’s ideas stolen from live and kicking and four quarters. People didn’t like it then and they clearly don’t like it now. What the hell was seven thinking? It is a horrible boring show, that makes the footy show look exceptional.

  6. The bounce’s attempt to be “family friendly” has created a show that is dull, bland and extremely arduous to watch. Please can we all get over this frightful obsession with “family friendly” viewing, it’s just a rubbish concept that producers are using to sell shows.

It is very sad to see a legend like Lethal Leigh – one of the toughest, greatest players to play the game – slowly rotting away on The Bounce. In the meantime I’ll be taking Top Gear on GO.

  7. The Matty Johns what? What a garbage concept. And before anyone says anything, no i haven’t watched it and i’ll never waste 60 minutes of my time.

Thursday Night Live from 7:30pm on ONE followed by The Footy Show (NRL) on Nine at 9:30pm. That seemed to work really well last night. For the second half of last season, all I watched was TNL and i didn’t even bother with The Footy Show.

For those that haven’t watched TNL, give it a go. They don’t just talk AFL and NRL, but also Super 14, motor-sport, Golf and more. They have ‘via satelite’ and in-studio guests from varying sports each week and have a few fun ‘n’ games and some skits. Better than The Footy Show (NRL + AFL) IMO.

  8. I love my Footy and thought Matthew Johns was the standout on The Footy Show but……….. his new show stinks, that hurts me to say but it is the truth. Disjointed, old hack and a copy of TFS.

  9. This show is very very bad. They promoed the hell out of Jarryd Roughhead then asked him about two questions while spending the rest of the time sucking up to Barry Hall. Also what happened to the chick? She’s gone from hosting an entire segment, to appearing in the audience for one minute at the end of the show and handing out vouchers as prizes. Looks like the channel seven boys club has another victim.

  10. @ Dr. Rudi ‘Matty Johns (who?)’

He played 11 years of Professional Rugby League, won a Premiership. Played 8 times for Australia, and a few matches for NSW in SOO.

Why even bother to ask who he is, it just comes across as ignorant.

  11. I’ll declare zero interest in NRL / Matty Johns (who?). I did switch on The Bounce last night, but it couldn’t hold my interest. Some dud sketch about a guy running the footy tipping contest at 7; and later, Matthew Richardson fluffing his way through a match preview. As for the (AFL) Footy Show – sorry, it’s been 10 years since I was a regular viewer there.

I’ll echo other sentiments – give me a serious football show; and give it to me at a decent timeslot (7.30pm on Thursday sounds right ). ‘Before The Game’ on 10 is another example of a potentially good show, spoilt by the comedians. Let them do the funny stuff, but don’t interrupt Sam Lane when she’s interviewing a guest.

  12. I’m from SA, love my footy, but i find the Matty Johns Show and the NRL Footy show both better than the AFL versions of each. Peter Hellier is not a great host, he has that tone of voice that irks me, and he’s a comedian not a footy expert which is a big difference to Matty Johns. And he seems to rush through saying everything.
I think the Matty Johns show needs to cut the Man child skit and allow more time to go through every game rather than just skimming 3 games at the end. But it’s definietly a better show.
Pity i have to wait til 12am to watch both NRL shows and they’re on at same time.
I prefer Footy Classified anyway, so i want to see serious football discussion, perhaps Seven should think about bringing back Talking Footy instead.

  13. The Matty Johns Show is frustrating… Matthew Johns answered a live blog full of questions on some newspaper website (ihonestly can’t remember where though) and he kept saying that he fully believed Controversy Corner deserved longer than the “8 minutes that it was given” and that it would be made longer, and that they’d talk about football more.

Well it hasn’t changed – just when Blocker & the reporter guy fully get into a debate, he changes the subject before they can finish their opinions then quickly rushes into shutting Blocker up with a fruitbasket. They barely talk about the football besides some awkward quips about the week that was. I love NRL and would happily sit through all the crappy skits that Matthew Johns does (he does do them well, I do chuckle at some of them) if he balanced it out with more footy but at the moment NRL footy show is the only thing where they’re actually serious about the subject and don’t cut their interviews off and discuss serious subjects!

  14. What the helll was with the fifty thousand Swans ads in The Matty Johns show?

They really must be struggling if they have to buy air time in a Rugby League show.

  15. I watched The Matty Johns Show and also checked out The Bounce after Family Guy, I must say I do prefer Anh Do as the taxi driver. I wish Anh Do could have a bigger presence on the show though.

The Bounce seems like Rove meets The (AFL) Footy Show with that set. I like the fact that Helliar does a monologue at the start and the chat with the singer from the band.

There was a lot more footy talk in The Bounce than TMJS and the previews were longer than 30 seconds also!

OT – has anyone seen that “The Pacific” ad that has “at 19 he wants to play for The Wallabies” with the guy wearing a (ARL) Kangaroos jersey. Different sport, Channel Seven! Although it has been so long since they’ve covered any rugby league.
