Axe hovers over Damages

Rising costs may mean the end of critically-acclaimed cable drama starring Glenn Close, unless a deal can be forged with another partner.

The future of Damages is precarious with the FX Network citing rising costs may mean the show ends.

The drama starring Glenn Close has always been critically-acclaimed but struggled to perform in ratings.

However, EW.com is reporting that Sony is talking to DirecTV’s 101 Network about partnering on a possible fourth season. Future seasons would likely air first on DirecTV and FX thereafter.

NBC forged a similar deal with critical darling Friday Night Lights.

Despite its Golden Globes and Emmy Award wins (and even more in nominations) the show has been averaging under a million viewers and dismal figures with the important 18-49 viewers.

Glenn Close has previously noted the show is possibly the best-written work she has had. The show has also starred Rose Byrne, Ted Danson, William Hurt, Tate Donovan, Marcia Gay Harden, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Zjelko Ivanek and Campbll Scott.

Satellite channel DirecTV is also airing the Underbelly series in the US.

In Australia Damages‘ first season struggled on Nine, which on-sold the second season to Foxtel. A date for Season Three has not yet been announced.

  1. Damages is one of the best drama series out there. S2 wasn’t that great but S3 has been really good, not as good as S1 but miles better then some of the other drama series on TV now.
I do wish for another season but if they can wrap up things here then I guess I’ll be satisfied.

  2. I wish GO would get the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Damages – I really enjoyed Season 1, despite having to hunt for it on Ch9 when it changed timeslots. *sigh* Now I guess I’ll never see any more of it.

  3. If Season 3 gets a decent conclusion i dont mind it ending even though its arguably the best drama on TV at the moment… But i would not be adverse to a fourth season, especially if the current season doesn’t wrap stuff up… Hanging out for the last couple of episodes over the next few weeks now…

  4. It never had any chance at getting a 4th season. It’s a good, but very dark show, but its own US ratings have always been abysmal and filming in New York city is very expensive.

  5. I downloaded season 1 & 2 from iTunes, I gave up waiting for Nine to pull their heads out, put it on at a decent hour and stop moving it around. An excellent show, it’ll be very sad if it doesn’t continue for at least one more season. The ending of the second season was a bit rushed and forced, but overall it was a very good series.

  6. this season is really good. it is not as confusing as other seasons with all the back and forth time wise. the only thing i dont like about this season is all the dreams they have. too many dream scenes for me.
