Gervais back to host Golden Globes

After strong ratings, Ricky Gervais is lured back to host the Globes again. “Let’s see how far I can go this time.”

It can’t be that time again already?

Ricky Gervais will return to host the next year’s Golden Globe Awards.

The comedian / writer will front the event for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association a second time. Gervais led the last Golden Globes telecast to its highest adults 18-to-49 rating in five years, with 17 million US viewers overall, up 12% on 2009.

“I can’t believe they invited me back after awful things I said,” Gervais said in a statement. “Let’s see how far I can go this time.”

HFPA President Philip Berk said, “We are thrilled to have Ricky back as the host of the Golden Globe Awards.

“His combination of wit, irreverence, and spontaneity makes him the ideal host. He was fantastic last year, and he’ll be even better the second time around.”

(It was actually this year, but never mind…)

Gervais’ announcement as host is indeed very early on the Awards calendar, we still don’t have an Emmys host and that’s in August. Last year he wasn’t revealed until October, so it’s clearly a vote of confidence despite some mixed reviews.

The Globes are set for January 16th, 2011.

  1. One of my favourite lines from Ricky was when he said ‘I like a drink as much as the next man, unless that man happens to be Mel Gibson.” at which point Gibson walks on to stage.

Pretty ballsy right there, and so funny.

  2. His hosting was more there to do the job of hosting than a big funny hosting performance.

For the Emmy’s they have to get Neil Patrick Harris back right? They couldn’t do better.

  3. I like Ricky but his hosting at the Globes this year was pretty average in my opinion. The room clearly was not enamored with him and I thought that most of the material wasn’t clever. He is very watchable, but needs better lines.

  4. No no mikeys….We have someone better than Ricky Gervais or indeed, any other celebrity on the planet hosting our TV awards show….Bert Newton! 🙁

  5. Love Ricky Gervais. His spontaneous wit makes him a great chat-show guest. he and Stephen Marchant were great together on Norton last week.
