Matty Johns Show props up The Bounce

Mixed fortunes for Seven's football shows last night as the NRL show improved while the AFL version slipped lower, while some media kept their eye on a national figure.

Seven has some tough decisions to make today, but it isn’t as a result of The Matty Johns Show.

A story in today’s Daily Telegraph branded “Matty Johns hit by Melbourne Storm scandal” claims “Matthew Johns is the latest to be kicked by the Melbourne Storm scandal, with the former club’s consultant coach failing to add a single extra viewer despite the salary cap breach engulfing the game.”

It quotes the national figures for Seven’s footy show as a stagnant 754,000.

But it neglects to discern the figure is combined for both The Matty Johns Show and The Bounce.

In reality, The Matty Johns Show last night pulled 304,000 / 155,000 in Sydney and Brisbane.

Last week they were 249,000 / 139,000. It went up in both their respective markets.

The reason the national figure was stagnant at 754,000 was because The Bounce took another tumble while Matty Johns actually rose, based on the NRL scandal.

Comparisons with Nine’s Footy Show are unfair given the two hour time difference, but for the record it was 250,000 / 167,000 for the NRL version. In a reversal of Seven’s fortunes it is Nine’s AFL Footy Show that has propped up the NRL figures.

Sports scandals notwithstanding, today’s headline really lays with the fate of The Bounce attracting neither good word of mouth nor improving figures. It wasn’t assisted by the arrival of MasterChef Australia. At 161,000 last night it was fourth in its timeslot and now lower in Melbourne than The White Room when it was axed on 220,000.

If Seven is to act on The Bounce it couldn’t have asked for a better distraction than the NRL media storm and a long weekend.

  1. 7.30 Friday won’t work, they tried that with 4 Quarters in the 90’s, another failed AFL show from 7. They just can’t seem to get them mix right for some reason…… I do like the way they cover the football though and hope Channel 9 does not get it back. Imagine Eddie commentating again – ugh!

  2. The problem with the league footy show is that it just goes for too long. Too much waffling and buffoonery. They need to have shorter to the point segments. Also they need to get some better writers cause it hasn’t been funny for years.
Seriously why dont channel 9 just change their thursday line up to:
    Getaway @ 7:30
    Hey Hey @ 8:30
    Footyshow @ 9:30-10:30
That line up would run all over 7’s

  3. I’d just be happy if they could make this rubbish fit in its timeslot. I’m getting a bit tired of watching meatheads mumble on with their schoolboy-humour diatribe, while other decent shows are getting pushed 15 or 20 minutes late.

  4. if channel seven were to dump the bounce, i think for programming reasons they might have to dump both shows, not sure if a repeat which they will have to put into afl states (if the keep the matty johns show) will rate better than the current figures of the bounce. they cant put new stuff on as it will inhibit the northern states, so the matty johns could be keeping the bounce on air.

  5. David you should really check your comments board for trolls, do you notice how everytime you post something about the bounce being in trouble someone posts a thinly disguised version of the shows brief, like “I love watching this show with my family” or “I love checkibng the shows website for my team” Boy they must be busy down at the bounce office

  6. Family gal, why would you check the bounce’s website for information on teams? You could just check the afl site, or your club’s site… what an absurd statement. The show is a goner

  7. I still feel that the seven network have taken the wrong approach with these twin shows.

The timeslot needs an ice-cold, po-faced serious football show full of detailed analysis and statistics without a trace of hint of humous intended or unintended.

  8. Everywhere you go people are rubbishing The Bounce and it’s dismal ratings reflect that. The difference is Matty Johns like him or loathe him is in infectious character and knows his footy.

Both The Bounce and Cougar Town will be gonski in no time.

  9. David: According to the ratings page, Nine’s Footy Show picked up 167,000 viewers. This page says 267,000 viewers. Based on previous works, I’d say the smaller figure is probably correct. That also represents (from memory) the first time the Nine show has bet Matty’s show too.

  10. The Bounce is a fun show…safe for family viewing with enough footy information. I can follow up on the website if I need further info on my team. We enjoy the show keep it on please Channel 7.

  11. Is there another timeslot they could move it to? Friday nights at 7:30pm would be good right before the game, but they wouldn’t want to move Better Homes And Gardens. Saturdays at 6:30pm but then they’d be competing with Before The Game.

  12. it’s safe to say, the bounce hasn’t got much time left.

matty johns show with their talk about the storm saga was a joke. 2 ad breaksin the first 30 minutes, the footy show had none while talking about the storm saga. the 5 blokes on the matty johns on the pannel just talked rubbish in that 30 minute period and i couldn’t understand anything they said
