Moving wallpaper at 6:30

There's a bit of a surge of real estate stories going on by our nightly current affairs shows lately.

Our 6:30 current affairs shows have long been drawing upon a diet of familiar subjects: celebrity stories, shonky builders, red light cameras, parking fines, traffic jams, bra stories, weight loss, take away foods, big screen TVs, grocery wars, and how dirty is your dish cloth?

This year there seems to be a new addition to the list by both A Current Affair and Today Tonight: looking at glamorous homes.

Yes, any excuse to go inside “how the other half lives” is now cause for a story.

They provide pretty pictures, tap into aspiration and work a treat as moving wallpaper.

While such stories have appeared before, now there’s a flurry of them. The trend seems to have peaked with a look at the pad of Lara Bingle / Michael Clarke, especially as journos hovered outside goading us with stories about how the they were living the high life in that penthouse.

Last night TT looked at the homes belonging to the CEOs of our banks -although it didn’t manage to go beyond the perimeters of fences. ACA has also done stories on renovations and unusual homes, all without much journalism involved.

No need to delve into daily headlines, world affairs, the economy, or politics. There’s always more dream homes to peek into…

  1. I don’t watch the garbage that is Today Tonight or A Current Affair so can’t comment but most of the time If there is an important story Will happily tune into the 7pm Project. Some weeks ago there was a story about vaccinating your children before they attend kindergarten and school and Qantas Safety Record.

Do Yourselves a favour by watching 7pm Project or SBS Insight or ABC’s Compass If any of you want to see what real Current Affairs Are.

  2. Maybe it’s different over here in the West but Trash Tonight has been spruiking real estate almost weekly in WA for many years now. I think REIWA must have a share in channel 7 with the amount of air time they continually receive. It’s no wonder we have a housing crisis with a current affairs programs effectively running adds for real estate interest groups on an ongoing basis. Let’s face it there are a lot of fat, bra wearing, grocery and big screen tv buying people out there, who can’t distinguish between fact and interest group…

  3. @Dr TV: You also forgot “I can’t believe I got scammed by an email claiming to be from a Nigerian prince” as well as “let’s dump on whatever reality show is the hit of the day” or even “let’s see what product placement or advertising deals we can turn into a story”

  4. Between this and the new ‘wonder bra’ is it any wonder about the state of journalism in this country, ABC is much better with stories like the one this week on Four Corners!

As for where the banker live its another case of tall poppy syndrome, yes they make a lot of money but are TT/ACA going to go after celebrities next who earn big money for TV and Movies?

  5. this is where The 7PM Project is coming in streets ahead by covering topics of some substance, such as their veterans story on Monday and other topics in the past like problem gambling, etc. Whereas ACA and TT sit firmly at the bottom of the trash pile digging up stories like celebrity homes and of course Monday’s classic on the girl who is addicted to a certain carbonated soft drink.
