The Force headed for Northern exposure

The Force is looking to add Northern Territory police to its mix, according to an optimistic NT Police Commissioner.

The Force is looking to add Northern Territory police to its mix, according to NT Police Commissioner, John McRoberts.

The Seven factual already features police from Western Australia and New South Wales.

The Commissioner says cameras are likely to start filming Territory police work later this year.

“We’ll be looking at showcasing the excellent work [officers] do,” he told the ABC.

“And I think when you consider the harsh and challenging environment that our people work in, they do a fantastic job.

“What better way to promote the Northern Territory and indeed the Northern Territory Police by exposing viewers around the country to what our people do out there to keep people safe?”

Such a move would surely be seen by network and police as a ‘win / win’, especially with the landscape backdrop it could provide. But are television networks skating a line close to being PR companies for some government agencies? Viewers show no signs of asking them to stop. The Force is regularly one of the country’s top rating shows.

NSW Police have previously defended criticism that such user-pay deals with TV networks seemingly grants access to crime scenes over and above other media.

  2. Having lived in Darwin for 18 years (not anymore thankfully) I hope they show that changing the speed limit on the Stuart Highway, introducing penalty points, red light and speeding cameras hasn’t changed a dam thing – road toll is still as high as ever, but at least the dying Territory economy looks healthier.
