Fire at GTV9

A fire broke out at GTV9 studios in Richmond on Wednesday causing staff and stars to be evacuated.

A fire broke out at GTV9 studios in Richmond this afternoon.

Staff were evacuated after a fire is believed to have been started by a drape ignited by lighting inside the studio ahead of tonight’s Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

The fire was believed to have been small but caused a lot of smoke through the building, sending staff and stars into the Nine car park.

The fire is said to have started around 2pm today. Fire brigade arrived to attend to the incident.

A Nine source told TV Tonight, “It was only probably a small fire, but there was a fair bit of smoke and at one stage there was a concern fire may have penetrated the walls.

“It started in Studio 9 but the smoke spread further than that on the ground floor and I think up to Presentation Control as well.”

Smoke is still lingering in the building.

Tonight’s Hey Hey episode is due to air live to air at 7:30pm tonight.

The Heritage-listed GTV site, built as the Wertheim Piano Factory in 1908,  is to be vacated by Nine after being sold, ahead of a shift to Melbourne’s Docklands.

  1. @ david… i didnt feel george was being respectful either…… honestly…. if u didnt like my comment.. then u could of not published it….. but u did! why???

    1. George did not disrespect any reader. Go back to previous emails and you will find I outlined this to you the last time you did the same. Either you ignored that advice or it’s not sinking in. If you have any further comment or questions on this matter kindly direct them via Contact page.

    1. I do. As per previous email advice you are entitled to disagree. You are entitled to express that disagreement. Once you begin attacking a reader personally ie “you’re a twit / moron ” etc you cross a line that I have outlined with you before. Make your point respectfully or not at all please. “Twit” isn’t the harshest of criticisms but you have been advised of this ongoing issue before, hence my needing to address it in the post you made it.

    1. Vid while I didn’t agree with George’s comments please familiarise yourself with this site’s Comments Policy regarding writing respectfully of others, as clearly you have not understood this from previous email communications. Final warning.

  2. Given the the type of on screen personalities employed by Nein, this could possibly be classified as a ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’.

    I’ll get my coat.

  3. The show was good 10-30 years ago. It suited that era. The shows last year were good for a stroll down memory lane, but seeing the same format now is quite creepy. Looking back is fine, but I don’t want to live in a by-gone era!
If you know what I mean?

  4. george, some may say that Hey Hey returning has made channel 9 ‘superior’ and ‘mighty’ again.

Nine was once known as the king for live entertainment (IMT, Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton, Don Lane, Daryl & Ossie, etc) until Hey Hey first ended. They then passed the baton to 10 (The Panel, Rove) whilst dabbling with new live entertainment with Shaun Micallef and Mick Molloy. Sadly their shows (Mick had two) didn’t last long on 9.

10 has now ended the great live shows it once had (but hopefully they can get something from Micallef which isn’t just a quiz show), and 9 has now become the only place for live entertainment again with Hey Hey.

So I say long may Hey Hey and the ‘mighty’ and ‘superior’ channel 9 rein! As it has definitely brought me back into loving 9 again, until now all I had for my live fix on channel 9 was Sam Newman’s shenanigans on The Footy Show (AFL).

  5. @Camo – that’s the problem the world has moved on in the last 10 years, there are more TV channel options (FTA and Pay) the lots of other things to do, Hey Hey was great as a special last year but they have to really moved on with the rest of the world.

BTW did they mention the fire last night?

  6. Camo, if us detractors dont use our democratic right to whinge about it, it lessens the chances of this pure garbage taken of the screens wasting airtime that can be used for superior entertainment on the mighty channel 9.
