Matt Newton to host The X Factor

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven's The X Factor after only recently emerged from rehab.

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven’s The X Factor.

Newton, who has a string of controversial headlines behind him, has only recently emerged from rehab. He filmed his first day on The X Factor in Perth yesterday.

“I’m extremely honoured to be given this opportunity,” Newton said.

“I’m up for new things and going on a fresh journey. I think it’s really exciting.”

The return of The X Factor to Australian television includes judges and mentors Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating.

Keating has also attracted headlines following marital troubles.

The casting of Newton, who has always pitched himself as ‘serious actor’, follows Seven aligning itself with other TV “bad boys” including Kyle Sandilands and Matthew Johns.

The X Factor previously aired on TEN hosted by Daniel MacPherson. The 2010 version will air on Seven later this year.

  1. Unbelievable how shallow some people can be.
Matt Newton’s private life can possibly be anyone’s business other than his own.
I can only wonder how perfect the live’s are of the people who think they can sit in judgement of others.
If more time was spent praising those that not only acknowledge their problems but sent themself on a path to overcome them, we would all be living in a much better place.
Matt I am definately a fan, well done to you, I will definately be watching.

  2. So all the negative comments… memories of when Kyle was announced as judge on AGT or when masterchef was announced.

so basically we can expect this to rate through the roof. Apperantly they have 1000+ turn up in Perth. At least the word has gotten around.

  3. I must be the only non hater of Matthew. I can’t say I’m not surprised with the choice, and to be honest I probably wouldn’t have watched anyway, the previous incarnation was nothing much. But contrary to what the majority are saying, I think he is really talented. I wonder if it’s emotion talking when people say he can’t act, he was great in Underbelly and even better in TGYH. I say leave him alone until he appears on the screen. He might surprise you all…..
