Matt Newton to host The X Factor

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven's The X Factor after only recently emerged from rehab.

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven’s The X Factor.

Newton, who has a string of controversial headlines behind him, has only recently emerged from rehab. He filmed his first day on The X Factor in Perth yesterday.

“I’m extremely honoured to be given this opportunity,” Newton said.

“I’m up for new things and going on a fresh journey. I think it’s really exciting.”

The return of The X Factor to Australian television includes judges and mentors Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating.

Keating has also attracted headlines following marital troubles.

The casting of Newton, who has always pitched himself as ‘serious actor’, follows Seven aligning itself with other TV “bad boys” including Kyle Sandilands and Matthew Johns.

The X Factor previously aired on TEN hosted by Daniel MacPherson. The 2010 version will air on Seven later this year.

  1. Can not believe because of his familly name that he is on tv. Dad is old and boring and son has a bad reputation. Lucky the girls have nothing but repect and love. I know my family and friends will not be watching the program.

  2. this is for Matt to think about : Consumers create careers, consumers fund lifestyles, get your advisors to have you seen in the real hard world working. Your father is a chameleon learn from him and you could be a mentor for many. so pull your finger out, open your eyes and look hard at real suffering in suburbia and do something good with the opportunity you have been given.
This is for consumers: our humanity should be about supporting those who have failed and re educate and guide them back to a harmonious lifestyle. I believe also that this music market is underutilized. The success to Idol is Marcia’s genuine warmth. Give Matt some time to discover who he is and watch his journey from behind his underbelly darkness. Good luck Matt

  3. Don’t judge him by what he does behind the scenes ( thats none of our business) its what he does on T.V , Thank god your here proved he has great comic timing , and as for Underbelly I thought he had a solid performance ( so what If his New Zealand accent was not strong enough , I really didn’t notice ) quite franky Im also very sick of people picking on the ” Newtons ” people make out like there on every T.V show , last time I checked Bert only had one show “20 to 1” on T.V at the moment , and so what if they were anyway , there a very talented family , and I bet these fools bagging Matthew will quickly turn the other cheek once they find out he is good In the hosting role .

  4. What a bunch of haters you all are

I am looking forward to this show – I think it is a great line up of talent of host and judges and all Aussies – support Australian content on TV instead of tearing it down!

  5. Do you want more Australian talents?
Got to Parramatta jail or any other jail for that matter and you get hundred!
Whatever happens to channel seven is a disgrace.
Any one on drugs or alcohol should go to seven to get a job. Is that easy!
    No question asked.

  6. @Nick LOL and here are a few more:

    Wheel of Fritzl
    Fritzl’s Family Feud

Geez lucky Carl Williams isn’t around anymore, he could’ve ended up with a show of his own too!, I’m sure Roberta will probably end up with a gig too, anyone else?

  7. come to think of it Australias reality host are pretty bad in general imo, grant: too annoyong, nat bass: too wooden, Nat G: too fake, bernard curry:too boring, hayley lewis:better than AJ but still not that great,

although some exceptions: dan&son are perfect on DWTS, andrew G was good in the last season of idol, and sarah murdoch seem to do well on ANTM. will MN be in the good or bad pile?
    rant over.

  8. i feel sorry for the people that audition for these rubbish shows. surely they can find other avenues too be recognized as a decent talent5

  9. I love it how the Seven promo’s forget the fact that they have already tried the X-Factor once a few years ago and it bombed. There were so few that watched it that they think we have all forgotten!

  10. “Seven are trying to be the bold, badboy network with all these recent controversial hirings (Matty Johns, Kyle, Josef Fritzl”

Fritzl could host a few shows..

    Find My Family
    World’s Strictest Parents
    Trauma
    Thank God You’re here

  11. This could go down in history as one of the worst decisions ever made in Australian television.

Rewarding ratbags like Newton deserves nothing but contempt from Seven’s viewers.

  12. Channel Seven displaying the type of inept decision-making that was previously only found at Nine. *shakes head*
A truly atrocious show – the worst of this format – and now, one of the most hated men in Australia as the face?
I think Seven management need to go to rehab, as clearly they are on drugs themselves…

  13. sources saying sonia kruger and darren mcmullen were some of the people considered. sonia would have been fantastic i’d like to see matthew’s screen test if it was the best, he hasn’t really had a job like this before that we can look to.

otherwise people say they want the networks to take risks and try different things, here we are. after months of criticism, people didn’t fret tuning into kyle sandilans or mattew johns. doubt thins will be any different, promotion hasn’t even started yet and hype is already building.

  14. Another bloody Newton on telly, does that mean we will still be watching him when he is 70? I definitely won’t be watching anything he is a party to.
