Matt Newton to host The X Factor

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven's The X Factor after only recently emerged from rehab.

Actor Matthew Newton has been named as the host of Seven’s The X Factor.

Newton, who has a string of controversial headlines behind him, has only recently emerged from rehab. He filmed his first day on The X Factor in Perth yesterday.

“I’m extremely honoured to be given this opportunity,” Newton said.

“I’m up for new things and going on a fresh journey. I think it’s really exciting.”

The return of The X Factor to Australian television includes judges and mentors Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating.

Keating has also attracted headlines following marital troubles.

The casting of Newton, who has always pitched himself as ‘serious actor’, follows Seven aligning itself with other TV “bad boys” including Kyle Sandilands and Matthew Johns.

The X Factor previously aired on TEN hosted by Daniel MacPherson. The 2010 version will air on Seven later this year.

  1. Well, they have certainly chosen a theme for the show. Newton, Keating, Sandilands, even Imbruglia. Sebastian is a whole other story.

  2. I don’t understand the hate. He had great with impromptu comedy skills on Thank God You’re Here and if he can bring any of that to the table I might actually consider tuning in!

I haven’t watched, but aren’t the UK hosts comedians too?

  3. LOL, worst decision ever.

Unlike his father, Matt has the charisma of a wet rag.

I believe they chose him because of his recent troubles, and the fact he was on Underbelly. I saw this on the news, and even the 10 second grab of him with the Xfactor crowd was bland. He looks like he was mortified to be there, or thought he was above it.

They really should gotten a female host, did this year’s Masterchef not show them anything (with the all male panel, until the recent addition of Donna Hay)?

  4. points to Seven for hiring someone who isn’t one of their regular stable of personalities and thinking a bit outside the square – but Matthew Newton? With him following Kyle, Matty Johns and Axel (post-ARIA Awards), is Seven just becoming the rehabilitation centre for men who behave badly?

Next they’ll be offering a job to ex-Minister David Campbell?!??

  5. Seems like Seven are trying to be the bold, badboy network with all these recent controversial hirings (Matty Johns, Kyle, Josef Fritzl…wait, the last one’s still being inked out).

I was going to watch this – I liked the first series. But honestly can’t watch Newton host, he just comes off to me as creepy. Almost anyone would have been a better choice. Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised when the show premieres, but at the moment I’m thinking…wrong choice. Then again, at least its not Grant Denyer

  6. yay some fresh faces on Seven rather than more Home and Away actors. so long as he does a good job I dont care. Will wait and see before I judge.

  7. seriously.. what! why! how!

at least he wasn’t first choice, they offered the gig to Sonia Kruger, Kyle was on perth radio and confirmed this. A very male heavy panel and now host, interesting! i wonder if they will bring back the XtraFactor, works very well here in the UK as they put it on ITV2, something Seven could look to do with their digital channel

  8. Had enough of these talent shows.
Whoever hosts them wouldn’t make me
switch the channel to watch. I’m sorry this
    isn’t my cup of tea.

  9. Oooh, not sure about this one! I like Bert & Patti, but Matthew! I think 7 are hurrying this along and making some odd choices. Daniel McPherson may be a try hard host, but at least he comes across as likeable. I’m not sure if Newton is that good an actor! More and more this is coming across as a less and less promising production.

  10. What? Ok, what has been up with networks lately? Giving hosting jobs to actors, instead of already-talented real hosts? (those with personalities and already-established fan bases?) Matthew Newton? C’mon. The last thing he did was Underbelly, and we all know everyone hated him in that.

I’m not saying he’ll be a bad host because he is a charismatic guy, but I think his name alone may deter people from watching. Though, Seven will most likely pull good numbers if the judges are a good mix. Guy + Natalie + Ronan = yawn?

  11. Definately won’t be watching it now! What are channel 7 thinking?? The guy is a loser, he can’t act or sing and I doubt he will be any good at hosting a TV show.

  12. Are they cashing in on the Newton name much? (Seven not Matthew Newton). There will be a lot of pressure on him won’t there? His father is a great host but then we have to remember Bert has been hosting things all his life and Newton the younger is new to it!

  13. Bad move Channel 7 – female viewers won’t warm to. Kyle and Matthew Johns are likeable because of their charisma – Newton is not.
