Upfronts: NBC

This week US networks reveal their Fall schedules for 2010. Here's what to expect from NBC.

This week US networks reveal their “Upfronts” -the Fall schedules for 2010.

It is the equivalent of Australian networks having annual programme launches at the end of the year, except that they commit shows to timeslots for advertisers (and they have weeded out more lemons than our networks).

The Hollywood Reporter has leaked the first of them -NBC’s, after a journo caught the technical rehearsal at a swanky Hilton Hotel.

It claims NBC will have an action-adventure Monday night, a crime drama Wednesday and an all-comedy Thursday. Despite expectations, NBC will not launch a new comedy block.

Adding Love Bites shifts Parks & Recreation to midseason.

Mondays:
8 P.M. Chuck
9 P.M. The Event
10 P.M Chase

Tuesdays:
8-10 P.M. Biggest Loser
10 P.M. Parenthood

Wednesdays:
8 P.M. Undercovers
9 P.M. Law & Order: SVU
10 P.M. Law & Order: Los Angeles

Thursdays:
8 P.M. Community
8:30 P.M. 30 Rock
9 P.M. The Office
9:30 P.M. Outsourced
10 P.M. Love Bites

Fridays
8 P.M. Who Do You Think You Are / School Pride
9 P.M Dateline
10 P.M. Outlaw (Aka Garza)

The NBC Upfronts presentation will begin with a clip of Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy, throwing to NBC entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin. Tina Fey will also appear.

More Upfronts will be announced this week.

  1. The rumour out there is after the 24 finale it was announced that NBC has greenlit a 13-ep series for Fall 2010 following the realtime format, possibly using CTU as the setting. David, do you know of any truth in this? There doesn’t seem to be an empty slot in that schedule for another 1 hour series.

  2. Supposedly there will be 6 completed episodes of Parks and Recreation before Amy Poehler has to take time off due to her pregnancy. The push to midseason is, apparently, mostly just to try and establish new shows, and perhaps make P&R fans to go wanting. Basically, they want to give Outsourced the lead-in from The Office, which means Parks and Rec will be there as a backup when Outsourced, fairly inevitably, fails due to having a terrible leading man and running entirely out of culture clash jokes, supposedly funny accents, and Indian stereotypes.

So basically give Outsourced a month or two to get cancelled and P&R will be back. Hopefully. On the off-chance that Outsourced doesn’t get canned? Well, damn.

  3. Glad Chuck is back, i hope it’s better than the current season, which is still one of the better things on tv. it’s only a 13 ep order though, which could be a good thing.. unless it means it’s forgotten by the decisions next year. although the current season was only meant to be 13 and then extended, which may or may not be responsible for it’s flaws.

i though they pushed parks and rec into production early becasue of the pregnancy. Maybe that hasn’t worked out as well as planned. Or it was only for a handful of eps.

  4. @Tess1988 USA fail programming generally starts in September and ends in May (most US based shows are having their final episode next week).

Generally, we (Australians) see the show in February (when our ratings season starts). Of course not all these shows will be shown on a commercial network over here.

  5. I hope to god that the move of Parks and Recreation was solely due to Amy Poehler’s pregnancy, because Parks and Rec is easily the best of the Thursday night block at the moment, closely followed by Community.

Love Bites seems terrible, a vague attempt at trying to make a new Sex and the City; and Outsourced looks fairly appalling, as though it is based entirely on a ‘culture clash’ comedic premise.

On the other hand, Perfect Couples seems like it has promise, and Friends with Benefits has Ryan Hansen of ‘Party Down’ which is another of the incredible US comedies on air at the moment; plus, the preview makes it look quite clever.

  6. Richo, the main complaint re NBC was Jay leno last year so they might be less hated this year. i hope they release their Fall schedule’s trailers, so far it’s only been these previews which look ok but don’t really sell the shows well. you can tell a lot about a comedy from a 30sec outtake but not a drama.

  7. Fall? You mean northern Autumn and spring for those south of the equator. When I first read the description I read it as ‘fail schedules’.

  8. NBC are still not a huge draw for me. Only watched The Office this season until Chuck returned and Parenthood premiered. Good to see all three back, except that Chuck has floundered on Monday nights since it started. I would have liked a change there, but at least they have been consistent with it. Four seasons has been great, but i dont expect another after that.
Out of the new stuff, at this stage The Event is all that’s grabbing me. Chase could be okay, but Undercovers just sounds like another JJ spy series – with a Mr and Mrs Smith twist on it. Snore!

  9. nothing of great interest in NBCs autumn schedule. Hopefully abc america’s autumn schedule is better.

@Gina: It would be a waste if Aussie networks did keep their schedules secret until the las minute, because they change them week to week- axing or bumping shows that don’t get top viewership.

  10. I must also say, I don’t get why there’s so much hate for NBC in America. Yeah, they cancelled some good shows like Journeyman and there was the Leno thing, but they have a lot better shows than other networks like CBS and ABC. Although with Lost, Heroes and 24 gone the only shows I’ll be watching are Californication, Dexter, Supernatural and VD.

Other shows like Friends and Benefits, The Cape (with Firefly/Terminator’s Summer Glau and the dude from Sea Patrol), and Perfect Couples will premiere midseason.

  11. from the clips released Outsourced and Love Bites look hilarious, i will definately be watching those 2. The event, chase and the legal shows haven’t grabbed me yet, undercovers looks really good.

  12. So glade to see Chuck still there (even though I knew it was coming back) And now followed by The Event which they are calling the new 24. Also Love Bites sounds interesting.

Now the 99 dollar question is when will any of these new shows come here? And not so new! When will Seven air Parenthood?

  13. Pretty strong line up. Hopefully 2010/11 will be good to the once mighty NBC.

David, just a question, why do Aussie networks keep their schedules (I use that word loosely) such a secret until the last minute? Strange…

  14. Isn’t this season of The Office and probably Community nearly over? Do they go directly onto a new season or have a break like we do?
