ABC News theme remix charting in ARIA

When was the last time a TV theme was charting in ARIA?

When was the last time a TV theme was charting in ARIA?

In fact when was the last time a News theme charted…. if at all?

But the former ABC News Theme as remixed by Perth band Pendulum is currently sitting at #38 in the ARIA singles charts.

The classic theme, composed by Tony Ansell and Peter Wall, was used by the broadcaster until 2005.

Wall recently told The Age, “I’m happy for someone to have rediscovered it because it’s probably the best thing we ever wrote.”

Maybe the ABC could make use of Pendulum’s remix for ABC News 24?

There are a bunch of other News Theme remixes on YouTube. Here is TEN News theme (which was actually composed by Kamahl’s son).

Seven News 2002 remix.

  1. I like it! Does anyone remember when Channel 7 Sydney used a Rick Wakeman compilation as their theme? I think they also changed the news title to “Seven Nightly News” and it was in the early 1980’s.

  2. When was the last time a TV theme was charting in the ARIA charts?
It was actually a few weeks ago when “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman” by K-OS was on the chart, which is a rap remix to the theme from “The O.C.”.

  3. @ Matt

if you have a lil’ look on youtube, all the australian networks have a copied either the american or the uk stations many times over…… 7 news(nbc), 9 news(abc), nightline (abc nightline) etc

its standard practice, as an affiliate to those stations they have access to these and many other perks……

  4. Do a search for nbc news theme, you’ll notice that seven’s news theme is exactly the same.

Seven has No creativity, always stealing ideas from america

  5. There is a difference between pinching a song to use as a theme for a tv show and actually recording a song specifically for a show. I’m pretty sure the ‘More Than A Game’ track, which was specifically written for the AFL Footy Show charted ages ago. Anyways, when I first heard this remix, i couldn’t stop laughing. To hear a serious news theme turned into a techno house clubby doof doof track was too much for me to handle. Only thing I didn’t like about it was it didn’t finish with the trademark high notes of the original theme. Overall I think it’s brilliant. They should do proper remixes of the other 3 network’s news themes too!

  6. What about “Believe It Or Not (theme from Greatest American Hero) by Joey Scarborough & I Could Be So Good For You (Theme from Minder) by Dennis Waterman.
Both were Top Ten hits in the early 80’s .

  7. Re: Ed

Hot ‘n’ Cold sort of is the most recent theme song to chart. But MC only used the song as their theme after it charted, the same with My Kitchen Rules using Kesha’s song.

In terms of original theme songs, there were many that made the ARIA charts in Australia, either in their original form or remixed. Prior to the Saddle Club and Big Brother themes, others which made it to the charts was “Can We Fix It” by Bob The Builder, The X-Files theme remix by Triple X, “I’ll be There for You” by Rembrandts (Friends), “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants (Malcolm In The Middle) and the Seseme Street theme song remix, released as “Sesame’s Treet” by Smart E’s back in ’92.

  8. Hilarious. This and the fact that I saw Pendulum as support act to Darren Hayes years ago (Not a gig of my choice, I hasten to add) make it hard to take Pendulum seriously.

  9. It’s quite a good production. But they really need to get an official music video made for the ABC News theme remix, now that it has made it into the singles chart.

The last time a TV theme charted in ARIA was probably Saddle Club or Big Brother theme song.
