Weather presenter Paul Burt departs Seven

Popular Gold Coast weatherman one of many staff to depart Seven in redundancy rounds.

Seven News Gold Coast weather presenter Paul Burt is one of dozens of staff to depart the network in a major round of redundancies.

The Courier Mail reports Burt, who has gained a cult following, did not present his usual weather bulletin on Tuesday night, with Brisbane weather reporter Tony Auden filling in. Burt started his news career at Channel 10 before moving to Nine in 2005 where he filed weather reports for both the Gold Coast and Brisbane news bulletins, often placing himself in the path of torrential rain or wild winds for his entertaining crosses.

In 2022 Burt was about to do a live cross around dangerous surf conditions on Surfer’s Paradise when a child got into distress. He and others leapt to the rescue, pulling the 10-year-old from the water.

He has been at the Seven network since 2013 but declined to comment.

Seven’s Gold Coast news bulletin is expected to continue operating on a skeleton staff after several employees and freelancers were among those let go.

Seven West Media will reportedly cull up to 150 jobs.

  1. Can also report that Seven Local News on the Sunshine Coast did not go to air on Tuesday night. They took the Brisbane news in full instead.
