Airdate: The Volcano that Stopped the World

Eyjafjallajökull -it’s a word that will send shivers down the spine of many (presuming they can pronounce it).

The Icelandic volcano interrupted the plans of millions, including some Aussie TV execs stuck in Europe after trade events in France.

It sent Eurovision plans awry. And kept Aussie news presenters on their diction-best performances.

In April 2010 an eruption from a volcano in Iceland paralysed air travel across Europe. As a cloud of volcanic ash drifted over the continent it created the biggest ‘no fly’ zone ever known.

But in the chaos, one British geologist made it to the heart of the eruption zone. Professor Nick Petford went to explore the science behind the crisis.

Following the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano, The Volcano That Stopped The World explores the untold geological and scientific background behind the headlines of this extraordinary story.

This one-hour program explores the dangers posed by the ash and the effects that it has on aircraft and aviation, as well as exploring the impacts of further possible eruptions to the UK, Europe and the world.

It airs 9:30pm Thursday July 15 on ABC1.

  1. i remember watching.. actualyl i think i heard it on the radio, and the reporter was like its causing chaos and blah blah blah and talking bout what a distaster it was for people and he calmly said the last time it erupted for 6 months. i was laughing so hard. he said it like it was no big deal…. hehe

  2. There’s a Icelandic Guy on Youtube that correctly says Eyjafjallajökull, none of the so called best pronunciations of it are even close. Just put in ‘You’re doing it wrong!’

  3. I saw the Media Watch thing and totally understand some of them not even trying to say the name.

FYI one of the stories on the first Top Gear in S15 is about Eyjafjallajökull.

  4. I think it was only Anton, on the SBS News at 6:30pm, who was able to say the name of the volcano.

At least it sounded like the name of the volcano …:-)

  5. Mal Walden thanked the Ten News producers for Not making him pronounce the name at the end of the 5pm News after it first happened.
Many American news stations anchors did attempt to say the name, I saw a compilation of it on 60 Minutes – very funny.

  6. When this was all over the news. I don’t recall any newsreader saying the name of the volcano. It was always referred to as ” the volcano in Iceland”. Not that i blame them.
