Die-hard sports fans were in shock this morning after braving chilly conditions to watch the Socceroos play Germany live on big screens.

Die-hard sports fans were in shock this morning after braving chilly conditions to watch the Socceroos play Germany live on big screens around the country.

The Aussies were defeated 4-0 by Germany in the FIFA World Cup match in Durban, South Africa.

Coinciding with a public holiday, there were 20,000 onlookers at Sydney’s big screens at Darling Harbour. Event organisers were forced to turn away hundreds of fans after the main precinct and the nearby Tumbalong Park reached capacity at 2am. Hundreds of Australian fans staged a walkout after Germany scored its third goal.

Another 15,000 watched at Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr site. Some hotels were also granted approval to stay open for the game, while cinemas across the city hosted special 3D screenings. Fans have vowed to show their support in droves again despite the Socceroos’ loss.

Full coverage of the World Cup resumes tonight on SBS.

  1. I agree about the horns! I cant stand the noise either.
That would put anyone off playing good football.

I realise the Socceroos strategy is to play a defensive game but considering how the German team played, adjust accordingly.
    More agression when needed!

Also what is it with Australia tackling for the ball, they always seem to be pulled up or red carded for things they shouldn’t be pulled up for, It has happened way to many times.

  2. Based on the AFL ratings I suspect AFL is really turning into a 3 state code. Not a national competition. The only peple who say it is a national comp are from Victoria, a sad little state with nothing to offer. Football may not be as big as AFL in 3 states but it is much bigger then AFL up north. 150 years of expansion in AFL and where is it ? what a joke of a game.

  3. If Germany goes on to win the World Cup, will Australians claim that Australia is the second best team in the world? That was the claim last time when we lost to italy in the first round, and they went on to win the trophy.

  4. soccer?! u gotta be joking, footy all the way for me. all those soccer fanboys who bought into the australia’s got talent at soccer malarky can go weep under a gumtree and hum waltzing matilda. mind u my brisbane lions are not going all that good this season but at least i’m reassured i’m in a majority for once about best sport judging by the number of pro footy comments here.

  5. And here come the Aussie Rules fanboys who never fail to try and stick it to the game at every opportunity. It’s fans like you that turned me off Aussie Rules and I come from an Aussie Rules family. Soccer fans never stoop that low.

  6. If you just want to bag something gang why not try your heads. There are plenty of soccer fans out there and as David pointed out, The World cup is on TV and it is news !

  7. @Justin – Also, David does frequently publish stories on the AFL and NRL whenever it deals with television. Big audiences for games, 3D TV, that sort of thing. It was an event that was watched around Australia on TV – I’m pretty sure that qualifies.

  8. Not sure where all the negativity comes from. Isn’t the Australian way to support your country, no matter what? If soccer’s not your thing, sleep in and turn off the TV when it’s in the news, but don’t try to spoil it for the rest of us gripped by Cup Fever.

  9. Again why is a story on soccer on a TV website. I don’t see AFL or NRL being covered. Even the Olympics wasn’t covered this much on this website.

    1. Justin people getting up to watch TV at 4 am around the country is news in my book. I also focussed on the fans braving the weather to watch TV in big crowds, not a blow by blow of the game. Whether its an inauguration, Michael Jackson’s funeral, Olympics, Comm Games these things spill over into TV.

  10. I agree. Most Socceroo fans are people who only surface at this time. Where were the fans when the Socceroos repeatedly failed to qualify ?

  11. Once every four years there is a claim that soccer in Aust will kick on and develop after the World Cup. It didn’t happen in 2002, nor 2006 after a successful campaign in Germany and it won’t now, particularly given the parlous state of most A League clubs’ finances.

Let’s get back to the usual (and in this country) genuine Australian winter sports. By that I mean aussie rules, rugby league and rugby union.

  12. get over it… i don’t know why we think we can be great at everything. if you know soccer, you’d know we had little chance against the Germans.

  13. Yesterday, my friends and I were joking about Germany winning 12-0. The only ones who were in shock would have been those who are in denial. The Socceroos still need more experience.
